looking for a mini-vacation
 

I am looking for a place for my 10th wedding anniversary. We are going for 4 nights, so looking for something direct from NY, not too far from the airport. Some thoughts were St. Maarten, Barbados, Puerto Rico or St. Thomas.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

A lot of what would be the best choice for you depends on what you and your husband would like to do - and what you are looking for in a destination. That would help in determining which would be the best island.

Since you only have 4 nights, I wouldn't suggest Barbados - it may be too far, and it you don't want to spend a lot of time to get to it.

How about Bermuda? I know you could get direct flights from New York and it is a beautiful island. I ahve not been there, but I have family and friends that rave about it. Other tropical options that are close to NY are the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos.

I am inclined to agree with Snorkelcat. We spent our tenth anniversary in Bermuda.It's so romantic to sit at night with a glass of wine. St. Thomas would be ok, too, I just think Bermuda is a better option.

The only problem with Bermuda is that we are looking to go end of Feb/early March. I believe it is still chilly that time of year.
We are not much beach people. We want a place that has a great pool, some water sports, entertainment.

Hmmm, the El Conquistador on Puerto Rico comes to mind, with a beautiful pool, glamorous casino, several restaurants on site, and the bioluminescent bay of Fajardo right there. There are also daysails available from Fajardo.

I would second the recommendation for the El Conquistador in Puerto Rico. My husband and I did a 3-night trip there from Maryland this past February. With a non-stop, early flight from BWI to SJU, we were in Puerto Rico and at El Con by lunchtime.

It's a spectacular property and offers much of what one might seek in a tropical escape. Two caveats: the beach is on a private island which you must access by ferry (but the pools are convenient and spectacular, so if you want sun and water and are willing to forego sand, you'll be fine), and the property is HUGE -- which can mean lots of ground to cover when you are moving between amenities, and lots of other guests.

Thanks for the info. El Conquistidor was one of the hotels that came to mind. Sounds like it might be just what I am looking for.

I would yell Bermuda even if you are not a beach people because lagunes there like a pool but pretty and just being near it makea your head spin.
But you are going later, so why not to try Gaylord Resort (Ophry House) anywhere in FL or New Hampshire? Google it and you'll be glad you did.

Barbados is wonderful, and guaranteed summer,even in mid-winter, with water temperatures never below 80 degrees. American, maybe others, fly nonstop from N.Y., only about an hour or so longer than to SJU or STT.
