Are you staying at the Marriott in Condado or the Courtyard Marriott in Isla Verde? If in Condado, a couple of restaurants serving Puerto Rican fair include Ajilli Mojilli and Ropa Vieja. Both are right on the main drag (Ashford Avenue) a short walk from the Marriott. If you are in the Isla verde area, I recommend Metropol. Family type restaurant serving Cuban/PR food. Also, in that area, there is Mi Casita, which is good for breakfast or lunch (they serve dinners). Also, if you take a taxi to Old San Juan, there are many restaurant options.

In Old San Juan we enjoyed Raices. We always had their Plantain Soup which is wonderful! We also loved their rice and beans with their homemade hot sauce that you have to ask for, it's not on the table. We also liked La Mallorguina for breakfast and was sorry we did not try them for lunch or dinner as it is just a small local restaurant and very reasonable in price. Also, the day we went to El Yunque rainforest we stopped at a little hole in the wall restaurant in the rainforest for lunch and it was very, very good! Very small and the people live directly behind the restaurant but sorry, I can't remember the name.

There is a wide walkway from the marina in Old San Juan that follows the water all the way to Del Morro Fort. I believe it is 1 1/2 miles and a great walk, full of ferral cats. However, once you come to the Fort it is so high above you, you cannot access it from there. For your family, they might be interested in the Segways, quite a few passed us. http://www.segwaytourspr.com/photogallery.html
But do either walk or take the trolley to Del Morro and tour the Fort. The trolley that takes you to the front door so to speak, is white. We got on the wrong one so ended up walking anyway. The other Fort is San Critobal and close to Del Morro
