Local eats on Tortola

I read a lot of old posts here about the North Shore Shell Museum on Tortola having a great local breakfast for a very good price, but I've not seen any recent posts about this. Do they still serve breakfast there? Are there are other great places on the island to try for breakfast?

Other than the much-touted Myetts, what other good beach bars can you recommend for casual fare?

Does the honor bar on Brewer's Bay (or is it Smuggler's Cove? can't remember) stock sodas or is it mostly beverages of an adult variety?

How long into the night does the music play at Cane Garden Bay? Is it so loud that sleeping would be difficult, even with earplugs?

How steep and long a climb is it from CGB beach up the hill to the Lighthouse Villas?

Thank you!

For the latest and greatest on the BVI, I suggest you visit the BVI board at www.traveltalkonline.com -- you'll get more information than you can imagine.

To answer some of your questions...

Beach bars with decent food on Tortola -- I think the conch fritters at De Loose Mongoose (Trellis Bay) are the best in the BVI. The rest of the food is good too; casual and reasonably priced. Be careful of their signature drink, the No See Um. As they say, you won't know what hit you!

Aside from Myett's (which is my favorite restaurant in CGB), Rymer's is always good for a quick burger lunch. I've also heard wonderful things about Palm's Delight (between CGB and Long Bay).

Last time I stopped at Smuggler's Cove (last March), the honor bar was still standing, but locked up. Proprietor Bob Deniston died about a year ago, and I don't know who is carrying on the operation. I fear it only opens for the cruise ship daytrippers, but I'm not certain of that. The beach is still worth a visit, but try early morning or late afternoon, and bring your own.

North Shore Shell Museum and proprietor Egberth Donovan are alive and well and dishing up some of the most outstanding local fare around. Not only is the big breakfast great, don't ignore for lunch or dinner. let egberth know you're coming so he'll be around.

I hear that Pices in Soper's Hole does a great b-fast, too.

Beach Bars w/casual fare: Bomba's serves BBQ, any of the CGB spots, Nicole's in Brewer's Bay, there's a spot at Josiah's Bay.

Other good casual fare (not really beach bars, though) Coco Plums, Islands, Palm's Delight, Nathan's, Bananakeet, Roti Palace.

Uncle Bob has passed on and his honor bar is no more. Hi sson will occassionally open up when he's around and the rumor is that he may do so more frequently. Chris set's up a bar near the parking area but I'm not sure if he stocks pop.

Most folks say the tunes at CGB lull you off more than keep you up. It doesn't go too late except maybe on Fri & Sat.

Myett's and Rymers on CGB were great. We enjoyed the Jolly Roger in Soper's Hole. Barbecue at Bomba's shack. Two places that I can't remember the name of, but were really cool. There was a barbecue place on a back street in Road Town that was unbelievable. We couldn't stop eating. Second, there was a place high up on top of the mountain where we had cocktails as the sun went down. You can see both east and west from up there, so it was really cool. My wife is a photographer, and I couldn't get here away until it was pitch dark

The restaurant high on the hill, mentioned in the previous post, is Skyworld. The view is spectacular so get there before sunset; and the food was very good! We also enjoyed Pusser's for lunch and dinner (I don't know if they do breakfast). They have a restaurant in Road Town across from where the cruise ships dock but we enjoyed their restaurant on Frenchman's Cay. It's open-air and right on the water. The food is awesome and is reasonably priced. We also noticed a nice barbeque place near the airport but we didn't get a chance to eat there.

There's a great little joint in Brewers Bay (the only one in Brewers Bay) that has great cheeseburgers and pina colada. You can also get a chair on the beach there.

Palms Delight in Carrot Bay, Coco Plums, Sebastians, even Long Bay Resort has a great breakfast buffet. Myetts was a total tourist trap as far as food IMHO.

Pices was good in Sopers Hole, good roti, the best roti we had was a Palms Delight.

Enjoy! There's a ton of good restaurants on Tortola!

Peace, Greenie
