Like Caneel - but more of a condo?

We are considering Caneel Bay (have been to St. J many times, never to Caneel though). Our hesitation is that since we will have our 4 year old with us, and while we're fine sharing a bedroom with him, it would be great to have the bedroom separated from the living area - so at his earlier bedtime we could stay up in the "living area" and read, talk, etc. We are not into mega resorts, but lovely, low key and sandy calm-water beaches. Any ideas? Thanks!

Millie--take a look at the family cottages at the Buccaneer on St. Croix; our then five-year old loved it there.

I have found the room arrangement you are looking for to be hard to find at resorts (as the mom, I like resorts better than renting houses--less work), but at the Buc, the family cottages are two rooms connected by a bathroom.

It is also a very nice resort for little kids, calm beach. Also, a nice children's program if you want a little break.

Hope this helps,

Mary

We have stayed upstairs in the "beachfront" rooms on Caneel's Hawksnest Beach. If they allow kids in those rooms, there is a front balcony over the sand looking onto the beach, and a screened rear balcony overlooking the gardens, with access only from the room. You could use the balconies for your relaxing time.

Does Gallow Point allow children of that age? If so, that could be perfect for you. Also, for the price of Caneel, you could get a nice villa on many islands.

No sandy beach at Gallows. Not suitable for a child at all (imo).

Thanks everyone for your responses - Bucaneer and villa rentals are now in the mix. We stayed at Gallows when our son was 1 yr old: utterly wrong for kids. (80% of the units are managed by one company who has a "no Children" policy, 20% by a company who says ok to kids - we rented by chance through the 20%, brought our son, and consequently endured glares and feeling like we were unwelcome. I completely understand "no kids" policies and respect them, but Gallows should get its story straight)

We've been to and love Caneel on St. John.

We're going to try Secret Harbour Resort on St. Thomas this spring ... reviews are pretty good on this site and TripAdvisor. It is apartment/condo style accomdodations right on one of the nicest beaches on St. Thomas. There's also a good restaurant at the resort. The beach looks really beautiful in the pictures I've seen, and the snorkeling from its beach is supposed to be pretty good. It's not St. John, but the accomodations look like what you're looking for. Plus you can easily go over to St. John for day trips.
