Lavender Hills Condos on St John

My husband and I would love your feedback on LH, particularly Suites #2,9 and 12. How has the construction at Grande Bay effected your stay? Were the condos big enough for 2 adults and 2 teenagers? We heard there is a graveyard nearby?? Are the facilities well kept? The most telling info...would you go back? Thanks so much!

We haven't stayed at Lavender Hill, so can't really address how the construction will impact you there. We stay at Gallow's Point nearby. The Grande Bay Resort is huge, but think that most of the very loud construction is over as more recent pics that I have seen show it coming together. It sure looks huge now in the water view pics that I have seen.

There is definitely a graveyard nearby. If you were to look down form the units at Lavender Hill, it is right below. It (the graveyard) is also right next to Gallow's Point where we stay and it never bothered us. I think it is rather quaint yet quirky. The walk to Lavender Hill is the same as Gallow's Point, and although we have never walked it, there is said to be a rather large hill going up the LH property once you get up the hill to Gallow's. The entrance to LH is right across the road.

A "quaint but quirky" graveyard sounds so.....quirky
Anyone else with LH feedback?

Hi,

We stayed at LH last Oct. for 3 nights at 4w. The location is very convenient. It is a very easy walk to town. The construnction, noise wise, never bothered us since we were rarely there during the day. (I felt the ferry boats were louder.) We did need to walk and drive carefully when pass the construnction site. We stayed at a one bedroom suite. We are two- adult and a baby, enough space for us. Yes, there is a graveyard right below the condo. The unit was well kept, well stocked and has air con in both living room and bedroom. The bathroom was simple and old. The laundry facility was good. The view was ok.

We are going to St. John, again, in May. This time we are going to rent a villa and with some friends.

We also looked at some units at Battery Hill. I think if we would go with just our small family, again. I would pick Battery Hill over LH. BH is farther than LH, but still within walking distance. Most units have a deck with dinning table that overlook the beautiful Cruz Bay. The units are renovated. The bedrooms are smaller than LH. So was the living area and kitchen. But I feel the view woud be well worth it.

I have stayed in Lavender Hill in a 1 bedroom unit with a pull out sofa. It was plenty of room for the 4 of us (2 adults, 2 kids) but my kids weren't teenagers at the time. We saw a 2 bedroom unit and I think that would be better with 2 older kids. For us, the benefit of staying in that area, whether it's Lavender Hill or Gallows Point, is you can walk into town. For teenagers, this would be a huge plus. You can walk to all the shopping, restaurants, harbor, etc. Across the street from Lavender Hill is a small store in Gallows Point Resort where we rented our snorkeling equipment for the week and bought coffee/donuts,cereal,bagels, etc. There is a large supermarket you can take a cab to or drive your car to but this was convenient for supplemental stuff. The hill up to the condos is easy to manage...but I love walking when I'm on vacation to burn off the calories from the pina coladas.

About the graveyard, it was fine...it's very small and makes you realize you are a visitor in a real town instead of being on a beachfront in a resort. Our unit could have used sprucing up but I have heard they have been spruced up since we were there 3 years ago. You definitely aren't going to have accomodations like a nice hotel but it was very decent. I would definitely go back, in fact, I just called them this weekend to see if there were any availabilities.

Take a look at Gallows Point as well. It's a bit more upscale and is on the water. I think I would prefer Gallows Point but it's much more expensive. If cost is a consideration, you can't go wrong with Lavender Hill.

Ghengis, Maybe I have missed previous posts, but it is great to see you posting again. Again, it was really great meeting you and your family in St. Croix last year.

I am taking our family of 10 to St. John in August. I have reservations at Gallows for part of the time we are on SJ just to be close to Cruz Bay. The bedroom situation would certainly be better for us at Battery Hill. Were the ones you looked at clean?
Please tell me as much as you can. Owa

Hi, owa

I've being enjoying reading everyone's posting and busy planning my next trip! I noticed about your summer trip, too! How exciting!

We visited a few units at BH so I can be a little confused now. These are the 2 for sure I remember. If you check suite st. john’s website, you can easily notice why they stand out. All units were pretty clean.

1. Tropical Breeze – This was the unit I liked most because of its interior decoration. Compare with other units, this one has more living space and more open. I think the unit is at the highest floor, so quite some stairs to climb, but, very good view. My impression was that at the time we visited, there was no air con and the upstairs loft was open air. Being at the highest floor, the loft area can be pretty hot. I notice on the website, it says bedrooms with air con, now. You might want to verify….
2. Sea Breeze – This was the unit I liked, too. It is not as big as Tropical Breeze. The bedrooms and living space are quite small. At time we visited, I think, it was for sale. I remember the bathroom and bedrooms were newly renovated and looked very good.

Mostly what I remember about BH is the view from balcony and how much I would like to wake up and have dinner in such a view.

Thanks Ghengis, I'm afraid we can't do without AC in August. Did you ever consider staying at Gallows?

Thanks for the help. When are you going in May. We leave for Tortola 1 May. Owa
