I know this post is slightly out of date, but for someone searching on the topic of La Luna or Calabash, I thought I'd post my thoughts.

Conclusion: La Luna, hands down.

Here's why:

I stayed at both resorts last year on the same trip. They are completely different, though both were in the same rate bracket when I was there. La Luna is one of the most interesting properties I have evered stayed at. An earlier poster described its style well--exotic primitive. Though I would add that it has a model chic atmosphere (in terms of style, not attitude) that makes you feel like you're shooting a Vogue spread. It's refined, yet so comfortable and very friendly. The partially outdoor open shower with sea view was unlike anything I had seen, and the rest of the open design of the room lent itself to a beautful airy feel and outstanding view (all villas are cliffside/oceanfront), including a fourth wall made almost entirely of French doors.

The Callabash, on the other hand, was eerily quiet (while La Luna could have been considered serene), stiff, and had an awful beach--it's inside a harbor with a lot of anchorage. The pool was totally removed from the beach, and did not have any particularly notable qualities. Daily tea service was nice, but not at the expense of the location and luxuriousness of the property. I am not a fan of British West Indies style gingerbread architecture, so I didn't find the overall feel too appealing. It was tough to see the beach from any of the rooms--most are set back beyond a field of grass and trees--which takes the fun out of a terrace.

So, hopefully this helps anyone planning on staying at either of the two resorts, who may have similar tastes and preferences as I do.
