La Luna Status?
 

Hi, I wanted to see if anyone knew of how La Luna fared with Hurricane Ivan. We were interested in going there 8/05 but wanted to know what the damage was (if any) and to see when (or if) it plans on reopening. Any news would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi. Have you tried calling them? They could give you a re-opening date estimate. I haven't seen any recent news on the island. But honestly, I cannot imagine Grenada recovering from the hurricane by August. It will take them years (I hope I'm wrong). The island was truly devastated. 90% of homes were damaged or flattened. The devastation in Cayman and Jamaica does not begin to compare.

I have a trip to Grenada scheduled for May 21-28, 2005. I was debating between La Luna and Spice Island Beach Resort. I read on Spice Island's website that they will be closed for approximately a year. I assume La Luna will be similar, but I don't know. I probably will cancel the trip and rebook elsewhere. Please let me know if you find out any news on La Luna.

We have been following the news concerning what's currently happening in Grenada since we spent some time there recently and just loved the country and the people. Very sad that so many people lost their homes and so much damage was done. However, I have been in contact with the resort we stayed at, which is fine and have already been accepting guests. From what I gather things are coming around and services are being restored. Quite a few hotels will be open for the upcoming season and many people are back to work. Aid has come in and from what I saw in the local people their spirit will prevail. When a disaster like this happens it is helpful to the local economy to support the country by visiting when enough services have been restored and supplies are coming in on a regular basis. We plan on going to Grenada this winter to support the country in our own little way.

My info comes from a good source in Grenada. We talked by telephone 2 days ago. LaLuna Resort is open for business now, but they are waiting for their telephone and electric power to be momentarily restored. A couple of cottages received minor damage, and the restaurant area was flooded, but they have cleaned it up already. Wait for a few days, then they should be on-line again.

Thanks very much for the update. I have been incessantly checking grenada websites for information on the hotel. I am assuming you are the same sandcrab from grenadatravelforum and wanted to ask your opinion about traveling to La Luna in August of next year. My fiance' is nervous that the Island and hotel will still have not recovered and will not resemble the reviews and pictures on various websites. I am more optimistic and think that most everything should be back to normal in a year. What do you think? Thanks for your help!

By August 2005 I would say that the island won't be quite as lush as it was before Ivan due to new growth, but it will be beautiful again. It already has started to green up and flowers have actually bloomed in some locations. The sun is shining, the sunsets are magnificent, hotels are re-opening on a daily basis, businesses are re-opening, banks are opening on a slightly shorter schedule, restaurants are functioning, and all that has happened in one short month. Two of the major hotels were hit hard and will be closed until October/05 for massive rebuilding and refurbishing. They are Spice Island Resort, and The Coyaba Resort. Tentatively, La Source is closed for about a year. The others are bouncing back and many are now open for business.
