Kid Friendly resorts on Maya Riviera

Narrowed down or trip to St John or Akumal for sometime Janurary-February 2008.

Travelling with 3 kids 5,10,12 and needed a good reccomendation. Off beach snorkeling, great beach, some variety/day trip options are primary drivers.

Thanks

Akumal proper has more condos for rent than traditional resorts. Most of the all inclusive resorts are up in Playa del Carmen. That said, Akumal is a great choice for families with kids....nice little town, and great off beach snorkeling. Because most off beach snorkeling involves coral, you will want swim sandals for everyone. Try locogringo.com to look for rental information.

The Akumal Beach Resort is an all inclusive right in Akumal. Great snorkeling right from the beach.

We've been both places with our kids, approx that age. Neither place has much in the way of "resorts" - we rented a villa and condo. St John has much better snorkeling and much, much better (softer, more beautiful) beaches than Akumal. However, you'll have to drive to the beaches in St John, whereas you can stay within walking distance of the beaches in Akumal. There are some fun day trips from Akumal, such as jumping into and snorkeling in the cenotes and caves, seeing the ruins, etc. In St John, it's mostly beaches! You can do some fun day trips via boat, though; for instance, to Virgin Gorda to see the baths. Overall, we rated St John a 9 for family vacation; Akumal, maybe 5 or 6.

thanks ANNP. this really helps. We love soft sand beaches and snorkeling.

St John is going to be our choice then. Thinking of renting a villa in Coral Bay area and renting a car.

Excellent choice. Lots of villas to choose from on that side... we stayed at Starlit Escape and loved it. Plenty of room for your whole brood.
You'll definitely need a car. (We rented in St Thomas and took the car ferry over.) It seems like all of the beaches were within 10-20 minutes, and it's always a beautiful drive.
We're jealous!

Curious to hear if you've made your decision. EITHER will be great. (The only advantage or disadvantage to some is the cell phone access to US carriers on St. John. 4 bars on Sprint... Blackberry was even scattered in Mexico)

We fell in love with Costa Maya, specifically Akumal and are taking our grands there for Thanksgiving. The ruins, the peninsula, XCaret..beaches, solitude...all great.
