Just got back from Provo... if you like to shop or have good night life, DO NOT go there!!

The beaches are beautiful and the hotels and restaurants are nice but there is nothing to do. I MEAN NOTHING!!!!! I tokk my 2 daughters 1 22 and the other 25 and they were bored out of their mind. No core city, NADA!

joan May 23rd, 2002 03:07 PM

Allie,
Did you do ANY research at all???? Provo is not known for nightlife or shopping but it's gorgeous beaches. It's a place to chill, relax, veg....
Next time check things out before you spend your money.

Allie May 23rd, 2002 03:11 PM

Hi Joan!

Yes I did do research as I can only afford one trip every 2 years. I asked many travel agents and they all said it's "THE" happening place to go right now. I want other people to know this in case they are getting the same feedback from travel agents.

nina May 23rd, 2002 03:33 PM

Thank god. I HATE to shop while on vacation, nor do I care for nightlife. I prefer to make my own. Provo sounds like the perfect vacation spot for me!

anon May 23rd, 2002 03:40 PM

If you are at all familiar with this board, and you must be or you wouldn't be posting here, you would know from all the previous posts that there is nothing to do in Provo.

Actually, there are a few places that your daughters could have gone in the evening and had some fun. Latitudes, Shark Bite and a few others. There is a casino at the Allegro. You must not have looked very hard.

Joan May 23rd, 2002 03:58 PM

Allie,
When a travel agent says someplace is the "happening place to go", what they are telling you is that it's popular. It's where alot of people are going. That doesn't mean that there is a Miami Beach type night life.
YOu should have asked,'why is it "happening"? What do people like about it? Like I said before, DO YOUR RESEARCH! If you can only afford one trip every two years, then you can ill afford to waste one going someplace where you are unhappy.
And as Anon said there is some nightlife, a few places to have a drink and hear some music. But you and your daughters would have had to seek it out instead of sitting around being miserable.

poorallie May 23rd, 2002 05:17 PM

Poor Allie, she was just stating her opinion and everyone is on her case. I thought this board was for opinions after all. P.S. You need a new travel agent Allie if she told you Provo was 'happening'.

Luisa May 24th, 2002 12:34 AM

Hi everyone,
It's funny but we went to the Cayman Islands last year and that place had nothing to do. I mean nightlife was rent a movie a blockbuster (which is fine by me) and chill out. When I read about Provo I hear there is a casino, movie theatre...what more do people want. I even found out that Sharkbite has karaoke night. I just don't understand what kind of nightlife people want. I know u can't get no nightlife in the Caymans...I mean the restaurants barely stayed open past 9pm...so there is my opinion. Maybe provo is just not a conjested tequila popping place...thank the lord!
I'm going in 10 days for two weeks and can not wait...i'll probably goto the movies more there than i do at home in Canada!!!cheers everyone

Give Thanks May 24th, 2002 04:49 AM

Thank God there are still places that aren't crawling with tasteless resort style nightlife. I am a 20-something who gives thanks when I don't have to go to the mall on my vacation. Vacation should be about relaxing, not shopping, its just a sympton of our overindulgence and rampant consumerism that when we go on vacation we expect there to be someone ready to sell us something. How sad. Get a life and read a book.

xxx May 24th, 2002 05:12 AM

While I agree that Allie should have done more research and so don't have much sympathy for her, I wanted to respond to GiveThanks who says that vacations "should be about relaxing, not shopping." Thank you so much for letting me know what vacations should be for. I always thought that a vacation should be anything that the person taking the vacation enjoys. Now I know that vacations are about relaxing and reading a book.

Give Thanks May 24th, 2002 05:25 AM

You are welcome, so why don't you hop in your SUV or minivan take your 2.5 children and go to the mall. Enjoy buying all the shit that you really do not need but are compelled to buy. Shopping is so important!

Howard May 24th, 2002 05:35 AM

If you really looked into it there is someplace on Provo that has music every night. Your daughters would probably have liked Stardust and Ashes. You probably should have asked more questions on Provo forums and not relied on a Travel Agent who probably doesn't know much about Provo and probably never been there

Felix May 24th, 2002 05:58 AM

Provo is the hot spot and everyone is flocking there. But they have to realize that there is little else but a wonderful beach and not a party kind of island. Never have seen or heard anything that says otherwise.

denette May 24th, 2002 06:38 AM

Allie,
If you asked "many travel agents" then please on your next trip, do not take the advice of the same ones and then if you do seek out advice from new travel agents, before you make decision on where to take those valuable vacations that are so special to each and everyone of us, this forum and several others are so helpful and will give you the real story on most any place you want to go.

I am sorry your trip did not provide you "good nights", my husband and I just got back from Provo and I researched the trip thoroughly before and while I was there and found there is some place every single night with live music. To sit and enjoy each others company, have a nice glass of wine or cocktail and listen to music before, during and after a wonderful dinner was a "good night" and that is what you can find every night in Provo.
Hope your next trip with your daughters is more fun for them and all of you have a great time, finding something for all of your desired activities.

linda May 24th, 2002 06:52 AM

Most of the nightlife in the quieter locations is caribbean/fusion music, some dance stuff. I suspect ms 22 and ms25 were expecting their hip-hop and rap crap.

Allie May 24th, 2002 08:12 AM

Howard... FYI, Stardust went out of business.

cruiser May 24th, 2002 08:53 AM

Allie,
While we love reorts, we find taking kids that age can be risky. See it too often- they can't appreciate tranquil, laid-back stuff. I HIGHLY suggest to all families facing this dilemma that they experience the Caribbean by way of cruise ship. That way, they have beaches, shopping, entertainment of their liking and variety. Works for us.

Joan May 24th, 2002 10:55 AM

I 100% agree with what Allie had to say. my kids were begging me to take them back to Chicago they were so bored.

Carmen May 24th, 2002 11:27 AM

Joan.. same with me. I dont know what these people are talking about... there was nothing to do. We went to Sharkbite and it was dead! Everywhere we went looked like the staff was on their last legs. Like they were about to fall over. To be honest the only place we had fun at was Club Med. We went there for the disco and dinner. I'm 54 and I stayed there till 3am!!! I was so proud of myself!

Doug May 25th, 2002 01:16 AM

Carmen, that's FUNNY!!

Howard May 25th, 2002 07:50 AM

Allie--Interesting about Stardust and Ashes. They were open when we were there in April and have an entertainment schedule for May posted on there web site. Will check when we go back nest week

Lesley May 25th, 2002 03:21 PM

Why didn't you stay at Beaches? I know plenty of families that loved it with kids of all ages. My parents have owned land there since the 1970's and never brought my sister and me because they were big time divers, and we were teenagers that needed action. Hopefully, Provo will remain remote and pristine. After visiting the Bahamas 3 years ago, I thought it had plenty of action for teenagers. Check it out!

Anon May 27th, 2002 04:59 PM

If I took my ungrateful kids to Provo and they were begging to go back to Chicago the entire time, I guarantee you that would be the last time I ever tried to take them someplace nice.

greg May 27th, 2002 07:14 PM

Had a fabulous stay in the TCI. Stayed at Point Grace, it was heavenly. The beach is spectacular, the staff friendly. We did not want to leave. There are a few places to go for entertainment, but that is clearly not why most people go this island, it is for the serenity, the beaches, the ability to do absolutely nothing. Your travel agent did not do you any favors by not explaining this. Sounds like they just wanted to book a trip!

Wake up call May 28th, 2002 11:31 AM

Allie,

It's time to wake up girl!! If you had done just a little research, you would of known that Provo was a quiet island. Like other posters have said, your travel agent either lied to you, or doesn't know his ass from his elbow. Face it, you blew it. All you had to do is spend a couple hours online during your "2 year" preparation time, and you would have all the info you needed to make an educated choice. But unfortunately you took the easy way out, and let someone else make the decision for you without doing any research at all. Look at the bright side, you learned a valuable lesson!!

And to the poster who took their kids on vacation to have them whine & bitch that they were bored, and wanted to go back to Chicago....I would of told those kids to go ahead and leave!!! Ungrateful little bastards!!

Linda May 28th, 2002 12:26 PM

Why do the people who feel the need to bash and berate hide behind fake names and e-mail addresses? Is it because they are afraid to say what they have to say in their own "skin". Or is it because it's much easier to bash and berate when no one knows who you are? Kind of gutless if you ask me.

anon May 28th, 2002 12:28 PM

Simma down na! Simma down! Anyway, I've been reviewing this board for more than three years. While my research would tell me Turks is quiet, Allie's post is the first one that said there was absolutely NOTHING. Quiet could mean a bar or two, or maybe some evening entertainment at a few resorts. You can Research until you're blue in the face and not know everything until you actually experience it youself. Cut her some slack already. Geeezzz!

anon May 28th, 2002 01:38 PM

You know, the more I think about this, the stranger it becomes. Why would "kids" aged 22 and 25 have to be entertained? Good heavens, they are adults and should act like adults.

As to Linda, why I don't use MY real email address...check my in box for the 25-40 pieces of spam I get a day from people obtaining my real address from travel boards and 2) if you post your real address and someone doesn't like what you say you get hate email. I don't need that crap myself.

lindaisastiff May 28th, 2002 03:16 PM

How do you like that email address Linda?

Fred May 29th, 2002 06:07 AM

Just a few observations:

Linda, get over it, people will say what they want to say without a real name or email address. If you have to ask why, well, I won't even go there.

Allie, you obviously needed to do a bit more research BEFORE your trip. I'm sure you won't make the same mistake twice.

And last but not least, to Joan, If my kids acted like that, I'd have to wonder why. Sounds like they had no clue on how to appreciate anything. Could it be how they were brought up....a bit spoiled maybe?...Let's evaluate: Given a beautiful vacation, but they whined & bitched about being bored....Wake up....they were crying because they didn't get their way, which means one thing, and one thing only....spoiled little brats. I say too bad junior!!!

Paul May 29th, 2002 12:19 PM

Utah has beaches?

anon May 29th, 2002 12:22 PM

Good one Paul. Every time I say to my friends we are going to or have been to Provo, they always say "Utah?"
