just back from St Croix

Just returned from a stay on St Croix, where we visit often. Willing to answer questions, make suggestions etc for future travelers

Thanks for the offer Dave. I am planning a trip to St Croix in April. We are considering Carabola--- We love to dive and most oudoor activities. Any suggestions on other places to stay--Restaurants and/or activities near Carabola- it is our first time there.

dave Dec 18th, 1999 08:48 AM

Carambola is pretty far away from other places on the island, so if you stay there you have to plan on a 20 or 30 minute drive to other things/places. It's also now run by a time-share company. We will be 'testing' their restaurants etc soon, to see how they compare to prior managements. There are lots of outdoor activities on St Croix, horseback riding, mountain bikes, hikes, --e-mail me for more specific information

Hi Dave- we are going to St. Croix in two weeks- any recommendations on where to eat-what to do would be great!
Thanks
Aimee

We are going there next week. Any suggestions for reasonable, good places to eat. What were your evening activities? thanks.

Dave Feb 6th, 2000 09:28 AM

Try eating at Tutto Bene, Indies, new spot is Tyrone's in the Caravelle Arcade-He's the former chef at Indies. Out east Galleon was good, but they just got a new chef---and Vila Madeline is pricey but good.. For activities get the pink magazine and also check the Avis (local news) for ads at end of classified section

If I may make a couple of suggestions: Sunday Brunch at The Cultured Pelican located at the Coakley Bay Condos (east end) was good - also, Duggan's on the east end had good broiled lobster and lunch at Club St. Croix was also good.

Interesting how people's opinions differ. Of the three restaurants mentioned by Jane,(previous post) we think one is so-so, and won't ever suggest or eat again at the other two. Get a pink magazine when on island, and check the write-ups for all the restaurants.

Hello Dave,
Have you heard anything about the Divi Carina Casino Resort?

Jane Feb 11th, 2000 04:34 PM

Hi Dave:

You've got me curious! Of the 3 restaurants that I mentioned - which one would you not eat at again? "opinions are like belly-buttons, everyone's got one!"
Thanks!

We were in St. Croix two years ago, stayed at The Buccaneer, loved it! Great service, if you go, get a room by the Grotto Pool. Great location, too, just outside of Christianstad.

As for restaurants, we liked Wahoo Willy's and Tutto Benne.

If you haven't been before, definitely take a cruise over to Buck Island. Lots of fun!

Hi, we have been to St Croix several times but not for a couple of years. we stay at the villas at the golf course which are great but there is a dearth of good restaurants. Used to be the No Name restaurant at the Cane Bay Reef Club; is it still there? They had great fresh fish. Also did you go into Fredericksted at all at night? It always seemed a bit dangerous (dark and unpopulated) unless there was a cruise ship in port. Let me know...thanks! Also - any recommendations for a small sailboat trip to Buck ISland? Years ago we went with Diva/Capt. Francis which was not the greatest experiance. Maybe he just had an off day.

Wow, I'll try to combine answers to several mesages.
Cultued Pelcian is the one we would eat at again, won't go to Breezes at all, and Duggan's--used to be one of our favorites, but in recent years have had some bad experiences wih food, prices of drinks, and cleanliness--but yet, lots of people still go and enjoy it--along with the other two that were mentioned. Had great tuna at Indies last night.
No Name not in business any more, but sometimes there is a No Name night at one of the Cane Bay area restaurants.
Another place to try is Villa Madeline. Far out east, but a trendy place--chef has been on TV cooking, in the food magazines, etc. Pricey--entrees start at about $25.
For Buck Island,we suggest two alternatives to our guests. One is Big Beard, who does a full day trip with a beach barbeque, rum punch etc--a party trip. The other one is Capt.Heinz on Teroro. Very professional, bring your own lunch, does an extended snokeling trail, takes about 22 people max.
Weather's great today, and we think it's a great place to visit.

thanks for the info on Buck IS and no Name. How about F'sted? or is it so bad you don't ever go there? Any restaurant recommendations there?

TINA Feb 20th, 2000 01:22 PM

Hi,
We are planning trip there in June. I have 2 small children and am looking for
a nice hotel with great beach for the
kids. Thanks for any info you can offer.

Tina

Ron & Kathy Feb 21st, 2000 11:42 AM

Dave,
1. Was there much hurricane damage and if so, is it keeping tourists away?
2. We are looking for a "smaller-and-less-than-expensive" lodging on the beach the week of April 10th. Do you know/recommend the Cormorant Beach Club? Any others? Thanks

lynne Feb 22nd, 2000 12:33 PM

calling in on a cruise ship for a day only. Not keen on taking a tour with the other passengers.Any suggestions for approx 4hrs sightseeing by boat, taxi etc?

Carol Feb 23rd, 2000 06:44 PM

Thanks Dave!
I have a similar question to Jim's from 12/17. I am thinking of staying at the Carambola (I don't mind the seclusion) and want to know if it's a nice as it seems, and if the restaurants are pricey. Another options is Chenay Bay Beach Resort. Do you know anything about it?
