St John, Granada or Puerto Rico?

I'm trying to plan a week holiday for my wife and I and our 17 year old son for this July. Having read the various posts I've narrowed down our choice to the above 3. But not sure which to choose. I'm looking for good beaches, scenery, interesting culture, friendly people, some shopping, some sight-seeing, activities such as kayaking, rafting, snorkeling and good food. Any help or advice would be much appreciated. Alan

I have been to all three and would suggest either ST John or Puerto Rico. Grenada is beautiful. Grenanda there is no shopping at all to speak of and there are more good restaurants in PR or St John. Plus Grenana is much farther (if travel time is a concern) These islands are very different from one another. Snorkeling in St John would be the best of all three. The people are friendly on all of these islands, although St John has a lot more tourists than the other 2. - they do get a lot of cruise ship passengers in St John during the day.

Hope that helps! I am just not sure which of your requirements are most important to you.

GL let us know what you decide!

I like San Juan for the variety it offers and the great restaurants and nightlife.

Grenada is more more islandy and low key but I know some of the resorts are still not up and running.

I am not a fan of the USVI.

Based on these replies, I guess that it should be Puerto Rico. Any suggestions where we should stay? Would like a nice hotel on a good beach. Thanks again. Alan

Horned Dorset Primavera in Rincon
(small hotel)

there are a ton of larger resorts in San Juan. I love El san Juan Hotel and Casino (Wyndham). The Marriott in San Juan is very nice as well as the Condado Plaza (Wyndham) -there is a site, www.wyndhampuertoricohotels.com

Las Casitas village, el conquistador and martineau bay are all very nice.

There are tons of hotels in PR, it just depends what you want!

Puerto Rico is an excellent choice. It is very important to narrow down what you would like to do while in PR because there is so much to do.

I would suggest staying in El Conquistador or at Las Casitas (both Wyndham properties, in Fajardo).

There is some great snorkeling on the nearby islands of Palomino and Icacos (10 minute free ferry ride, if you stay at El Conquistador). Also, El Yunque Rainforest is minutes away and it is a must see site.

If you end up staying in Fajardo, you should definitely cross over to Vieques and check it out. Other than shopping, which it falls short on, it pretty much has everything you are looking for. Highlights are the best beaches you will see anywhere (with nothing - and nobody - on them), wild horses, and the spectacular bioluminescent bay. There are some great restaurants as well. You can fly or take the ferry from Fajardo or fly from San Juan.
