Just Back From Grand Cayman!! ??'s
Stayed at the Westin for a week. Tried some new restuarants (some great--some so-so) Went reef fishing. Any questions?

Just wondering what you thought of the Westin? How were the rates? Would one need a car to get around to various restaurants if we stayed at the Westin?

My wife and I stayed at the Westin three weeks ago for seven nights and had a great time. I would go back to Grand Cayman and stay at the Westin in a heartbeat. We did get a car for four of the days we were there, to see the island and try different restaurants. I recommend having breakfast across the street at Eats Cafe. The food is good and not too expensive. We asked for a refrigerator in our room and walked to a grocery store down the street for supplies. We kept bottles of water, beer, snacks, etc... in the fridge. There are many good restaurants on the island. We did go out every night and had a good meal each night. One thing I did notice is that many people smoke everywhere, on the beach, during meals, etc... You can not get away from the smokers.
If you stay at the Westin, ask for a ocean front or ocean view room. If you get an ocean front room, don't get the third floor. The third floor is level with the tops of the palm trees.
If you want anymore info, e-mail me.

sure I have a question. What was your spending like? Like how much did the hotels run and was it easy to get around, if one didn't want to rent a car? I'm not into big resort type places. would really just need a hotel, or B & B where all you do is have a place to sleep at night. Prefer to spend most of our time/day out at the beach and/or hiking. WOuld this be an ideal vacation spot? Was originally looking into USVI but seems rather expensive.

I've never been to Grand Cayman but plannig a trip for 6 adults in May. We will rent a condo...Question--how expensive are the meals/leisure, etc/ Ive heard Grand Cayman is far more expensive than other islands...what is your opinion? Thanks!

To both above: If you're not into a resort or large hotel, the Turtle Nest Inn is wonderful (!). Search this forum; a lot has been posted about it. We love it there.

We rented a car--would not do it any other way. People don't seeem to believe it could be more economical than taxis. It is--esp. split among a group (get a van). There is too much to see on the whole island; you need a car.

As a rule, food=expensive. I think milk was $5 or $6 US. Fosters (a/port) is most reasonable. There are reasonable rest. choices (Lone Star for one) & many listed on this forum. Also, don't think because you're paying $100/dinner, it's great. High $$$ is not always better. However, GC is well worth the money. Have a good time.

So what happened to Mare? She asked for questions but hasn't answered any?

I'd like to know what it cost to stay at the Westin. Is it near downtown? Is there a downtown? If so can anyone recommend a place to stay that is walking distance to beach, restaurants, bars, etc?

We have been there once but we were on a cruise and only spent a few hours there. It was Christmas Day and we just stayed on the beach. Would like to spend more time there. It was beautiful. Thanks!
