Jellyfish in St John in August? Leaving tonight!
Hello! My husband and I are leaving tonight for St. John for 5 nights and are excited about our trip! However yesterday I started reading about the jellyfish in USVI and realized this is the season!!!! I was wondering if you can tell me where they are generally found. Are there a lot of them in Caneel Bay or Trunk Bay or are they just spread out everywhere. Also how easy is it to see them if they are clear??? Are they gigantic???
Thanks so much

I lived in the USVI and swam (a lot) year around. Never heard of any of these jellyfish "outbreaks" until the age of the internet and message boards. Don't worry about anything...if it is of epidemic proportions, there will be warnings posted at the places you mention. Also....I believe it is May/June which is the "hatching" month of the larvae that causes sea itch. Have fun on one of the most beautiful spots on this planet!

Yes this is the "season" for moon jellyfish. They are relatively harmless. I was at Trunk and Cinnamon Bay last week and while snorkeling saw anywhere from 10 to 20 of these. They are light purple in color and translucent. They don't attack so you can actually get right up to them. They are actually very beautiful.

My wife and I were at St. John and St. Thomas last year at this time. There were jelly's but not a lot and most of them were within 3 feet of the surface making them easy to see and avoid.
I brushed against them many times without effect and they are really beautiful to look at. The 'body of the jelly is smooth and harmless, it is the tenticles which can sting.
More of a mind-game as far as being concerned goes as you are much more mobile in the water and can move away with ease.
Have fun.
