Anybody have any recommendations? I have alsos read in some of the agencies policies that you cannot take the top down on the jeep? Is this true? If so, what is the point of gettin a jeep!

Last year we rented a jeep from Courtesy Car Rental - www.courtesycarrental.com. We took our top down and then just put it up before we returned the jeep. We saw other rented jeeps that had their tops down as well even though the policy says otherwise.

The reason for renting a jeep is for the 4 wheel drive which is IMHO a necessity on St John.
The policy against taking the top down has to do with the unpredictable rain showers that frequent any tropical location. The agencies are merely trying to protect their vehicles. If you take the top off, you will be responsible for damage to the interior.
In addition, if you have an accident while the top is down, you are technically in violation of the rental agreement and that may allow your insurance company to refuse to cover you. It's up to you whether you are willing to risk it.
One other thing to keep in mind... though you may be able to get away with taking it down and then just putting it back up when you return the vehicle, if someone from the agency sees you driving with the top down, you may be asked to return the jeep. Remember St John is a very very small island, the jeep rental agencies all know each other and each others vehicles. They look out for each other and if you run afowl of one, you may find yourself unable to find another willing to rent to you.
All that said, their are several companies on St John that have an excellent reputation, Conrad Sutton, Courtesy, L&L jeep rental. You may want to choose based on who will let you park in their lot when you're in town. Parking is very tight in Cruz Bay!

We rented from Conrad Sutton and were very happy (though we rented a Jeep Liberty so the "top down" was not an issue). Conrad let us park in his lot when we went to dinner in town, which was nice.

We recently used Courtesy Car rentals, and the year before Conrad Sutton. Both rental agencies were great. Courtesy Car even brought us back to dock to catch the ferry on our way home after dropping off the rental.
