Jamaican Dollars or US$?

Am planning my first trip, to Negril. Are US dollars accepted everywhere or only Jamaican Dollars? If both are accepted, which are better to use? Thanks.

Both accepted. Use JA to be more Jamaican and sometimes also to get a slightly better price, especially if you go outside the area and exploring in the countryside. Negril is resortland, however,so US dollars accepted everywhere.

Use the Jamaican dollar for your cab fares, and small vendors. Make sure you have correct change. It's also good to carry some JA 50's and 100's for tips...

We recently returned from Jamaica and made the mistake of not taking enough cash with us (we did not have travelers checks either). I have always been able to use my ATM card when I travel (mostly in Europe) and relied on that in Jamaica as well. Do not make this mistake. We found that it was very difficult to find an ATM and our hotel did not accomodate this type of cash advance. We went to an all inclusive resort and did not leave the property very often, but we found that US dollars worked everywhere we went and seemed to prefered by most.

Jamaica loves US dollars. Will be at Sandals Negril in 3 weeks and never exchange our Us dollars.

We bring travelers checks and cash them at one of several cambios located in Negril. There are two ATM machines I know of but you may need to call your bank before you leave to make sure you can use the card outside the US, some banks "lock" them.
