Jamaica Trip Report

I realized that I failed to post my trip report in the correct location. This is an updated version. We had a wonderful trip and would return again.

My stepdaughter, step daughter-in law, both 20 somethings, and I spent a long weekend at the beginning of March at the Grand Palladium, which is about 50 minutes west of Sangster Airport. This resort is about 5 minutes east of the town of Lucea. We arrived on a Friday and left on a Monday.

The resort has two sides, Lady Hamilton and Jamaica. The Lady Hamilton side has several honeymoon villas and is geared more to couples. The Jamaican side has more traditional style hotel rooms, and caters to families. DH and I stayed in a honeymoon villa in 2010 and loved it. However, I did not feel the open shower concept of the honeymoon villa would be appreciated by DD and DIL, so we got a traditional room for 2012.

DD, DIL and I stayed in the Jamaican side in a smaller, less expensive room. We had a one bedroom jr suite in building 11, which is the closest buiding to the pool, lobby and restaurants. This resort is very spread out, with several low rise buildings over several acres. It is beautifully landscaped. (When DH and I stayed, we had quite a walk to the main areas. Although there is a shuttle that will pick you up, DH and I always walked.)

Our jr suite consisted of two double beds and a pull out sofa bed. It was not a divided room. We had an ocean view if you walked onto our balconey. Our bathroom contained a large jacuzzi tub, which we never used, a single lavatory, toilet, and a large walk in shower. The shower was poorly designed, as the shower head faced the door. The shower head was one of those removable typesand it was very tricky to get it positioned so the stream of water did not hit the door. With my first shower, there was no problem, but with my second shower, I flooded the bathroom because I had not placed the hower head properly.

The room had a coffee maker and a mini fridge, which was restocked daily with Red Stripe beer, water and soft drinks.

The girls prefered the pool over the beach. Most of the time we lounged on pool chairs or sat on a wall that ran through the middle of the pool. There is no bar directly on the beach, only up by the pool or swim up bar. I think that is why the girls preferred the pool. The pool area was huge, and you never had to look for an empty chair. We did walk down to the beach for photos and to take a quick dip. The sea was a little warmer than the pool.

Because I was a returning guest, I was allowed to make reservations at the ala carte restaurants. We had wonderful meals at Bubba's, the steak restaurant, and the Italian restaurant. We ate in the Sports" bar for lunch the first day. Service in the Sports' bar was slow and the portions very small compared to the rest of the meals. After that, we ate breakfast and lunch in one of the buffet restaurants, and had a wide selection of dishes.

We did a zipline. I cannot remember the name, but it was NOT Chukka. I specifically wanted to use the same company we used in 2010, as DH and I really enjoyed that adventure. Our driver, Murphy, gave us a lot of information on the ride to the zipline. There are five lines and we felt very secure.

The girls surprised me with a massage in the spa and it was very relaxing and enjoyable.

Some differences I noticed from our trip in April, 2010 vs our March, 2012 visit --
2010: Our honeymoon villa was much larger and the housekeeping service was much, much better. However, we had trouble keeping our villa cool enough for our taste.
2011: Our room stayed cooler, as the resort now keeps a hotel key card in the in the slot to keep the electricity on even when we are not in the room. However, in 2012, the humidy level IN THE ROOM seemed excessively high. Our clothes and sheets remained damp at all times. I checked the weather upon our return, and the humidity levels outdoors were never excessivley high during our stay. I live in Florida, so I am used to high humidity, but this was a different feeling inside our room.

Grand palladium caters to families and couples. It does not cater to people looking to party all night long. The disco is very small and there was not much of a party going on. That was fine with us, but I am just letting you know what to expect. The entertainment is fair. I enjoyed it but the girls did not at all. It is even cheesier than cruise ship entertainment. However, I did not go to the Grand Palladium for the entertainment, so that wasnot a deal breaker.

We felt the service in the resort, other than housekeeping, was great. Most of the people who worked at the resort were very friendly and helpful. I would go back again. There were NO bath towels in our room when the girls arrived. They did not notice, as it was drizzling and they did not go to the beach or the pool. Due to delayed flights from the U.S., I did not arrive at the resort until approximately midnight. When I realized we only had hand towels, I called the front desk. We received three bath towels within 10 minutes. However, even though there were clearly three adults staying in our room, each day housekeeping woul donly leave one wash cloth, one hand towel, and one bath towel.

We never made it to Sunset Cove , which is a part of the resort that is supposed to have the largest and best beach, including the kayaks, sailboast and snorleing. The resort also has an all adult pool near the honeymoon villa, a quiet pool, and a small pool by the spa..
