Jamaica is Paradise

I just returned from Jamaica last week. We stayed in a villa and the staff became just like family. I heard so many stories about vendors harassing people, but like any tourist area they will try to see you items. If no doesn't work, then "respect mon" will. I have never seen a place more beautiful and the people so friendly. We chose a villa because we liked to be able to eat when we were ready and we went into Ocho Rios and the surrounding areas and met the locals. I am planning my trip for next year. Can't wait to go back!!!

Could you tell us the name of the villa you stayed in and the firm you booked it through?

Diana,

Was this your first vacation in the caribbean? Maybe your expectations weren't very high. Yours was the first positive comment on Jamaica in a long time. You are right, the water is beautiful, but too bad the rest of the place STINKS.

Rosie Aug 6th, 1999 12:39 PM

Jay- you are an asshole. Everyone likes different places in the world and comments like yours and others on this board are so typical of your negaative attitude. Jamaica is paradise, Antigua, Trinidad, St. Lucia, etc. Some places in America are the grossest I have ever been. People get info on this board about specific places, not idiotic opinions like yours.

Rosie,

Lighten up! It sounds like you take everything too seriously. Let's face it Jamaica is for cheapskates and classless people like yourself.

BRAVO, Melanie!!

Speaking of classless...

If you were resonding to one of Decent Tropical's posts, I'd understand. His posts have become tiring.

But some of you out there are OBNOXIOUS.
The unsolicited name calling and "in your face" comments ought to be reserved for chat rooms.

Some of us read comments here hoping to get ideas for future trips. If you think some place is bad, say so. The unsolicited personal attacks should be

Melanie- Your elitism and obnoxiousiousness is not welcome here.

Who the hell are you to declare that the only people who like Jamaica are "cheapskates and classless people"?

Not everyone is as wealthy as you; there are people who are very limited in what they can spend on a vacation. There are also people who don't like to spend money unecessarily. There is nothing wrong with that and who are you to label them "cheapskates" !!!!???

Everyone has differnt taste. I personally detest amusement parks and theme parks, yet I don't say that all of the millions of people who flock to them are "classless"!

Why can't you just respect the fact that people have different taste and not resort to such rude insults?

If Jamaica is for cheapskates and classless people, then why is it that
Conde' Nast Traveler magazine consistently rates Jamaica's hotels among the top in the Caribbean and Grand Lido Negril #1?

Melanie, a statement such as yours shows true classlessness(if there is such a thing) and ignorance. A closed mind is a sad thing.

Diana, I could not agree with you more about Jamaica. A villa stay is such a wonderful way to truly enjoy Jamaica and her people. I love to read of others who enjoy it as well.

From reviewing some of the current posts it appears that quiet a few of the patrons on this list are WAY OUT OF CONTROL. Surely the creators of this board never intended for every reply to be positive, that is unrealistic and would be a dis-service to the person wanting valid information on a specific area if it is dangerous/too pricey/dirty, etc. It appears that the people that are attacking others need to get a life and not be so disruptive. I just returned from Jamaica last week and do not consider myself classless or a cheapskate. I am a proponent of value travel, it permits me to go farther on less. We rented a unit at "Colombus Heights" near Ocho Rios. The maids cooked and cleaned for us. It was a very good experience. The vendors in the craft market (Ocho Rios) were pushy like everywhere else in the Third World. Toruists need to remember how to say NO and remind the vendors who makes the purchase decision. They will make the decision for you if you are not FIRM with them. Jamaica is not the nicest Isalnd in the Caribbean, however it is also not the worse either. And comparing the value received for that trip to the expense, it rates high. I'd rather do Jamaica than Cancun and they are comparable in price for similar accomodations/travel. It would be greatly appreciated by all if those of you who are not being socially responsible on this forum would PLEASE BE MORE RESPONSIBLE!
