Jakes and beaches
headed to Jakes in TB this week..what are beaches in TB like?
any places that are "must see" or restaurants that are also "musts"? |
I was in Treasure Beach last January and fell in love with the area. We were within walking distance of Jake's at Mar Blue and found that most of the beaches were more cove-like rather than long stretches of sand. The sand was a golden brown and always uncrowded. The beach coves are separated by rocky headlands, so that with shoes one can walk along the coastline quite a distance. My feet would not have comfortable walking on the rocks without shoes--don't know about yours.
We had lunch at Jake's one day--my first time to try curried goat. It was pretty good, but the best part of the meal for me was the coconut tart. We also dined for lunch at Jack Spratt's a couple of days, which is next door to Jake's. Very good prices. We had pizza and sandwiches. Good food. They also have stout ice cream, which I found quite interesting. The day of our Black River excurion we ate at a place on the river that I think was called Tasty's. we had called in our order from the boat to have very fresh fish prepared and waiting for us upon arrival. Breakfasts and dinners we took at Mar Blue and found the food far superior to what else was available in the area, and even far superior to most food we'd ever eaten in the Caribbean. I have no idea if they take reservations from non guests, but I suspect they do. if you're looking for fine dining in a romantic setting, try it out. We loved our trip up the Black River, but the best parts of it were stopping amongst the wild dolphins to watch them frolic around our boat and then on the way home stopping at the Pelican Bar. That was one of the most surreal moments of my life. It was pure bliss. |
Mar Blue serves the best food in area but unfortunately one needs be a guest there to enjoy Axel's cooking. Two new restaurants have opened/re-opened in WHITEHOUSE, about 1 hour drive away:
Oliver's and Culloden Cafe/dinner only. Little Ochie in Alligator Pond/via road or boatman from Jakes; Pelican Bar via boatman;Sister Lu's Crabshack via boatman up Black River. Heart of Love Bakery, 5 min.walk from Jakes does very good breakfasts. M&D grocery on Fri/Sat very good soups -- lots of little places with cookshops in area. Wild Onion also does good food. BEACHES: On thin-side with undertow to be watched at Jakes, tho that near Jack Sprat is decent,if also thin. Fort Charles, Billy's Bay, Great Bay -- all a 15-20 min. mt.bike ride away from Jakes -- are best beaches in area. |
Oops, snoll, sorry to steer you wrong about Mar Blue's dinner availablity to non-guests. Tivertonhouse is the expert!
Tiv, any word from Marion? I hope she's having just as wonderful a time this visit as last time. |
Marion is once again rebooked to go back next end of January to TB. The
Mighty Beestones played for her b-day celebration and she's been touring some touring, including Appleton Rum plantation this past week... |
P.S. Axel's 'goat sauerbraten' is now
a mighty fine alternative to Jamaican currygoat... |
Tiv, thanks for the update. It sure does look like that woman has fallen in love with TB, doesn't it?
I'd like to try Axel's new dish. Barry and I are thinking that maybe next January we can go back to TB before classes start up for him. |
Ahhh...the woman who has, indeed, fallen in love with Treasure Beach has returned...just in the past hour.
What our dear friend Sasha/Tiverton, modestly did not mention was that the wonderful band that played for my birthday celebration was his gift to me ! I am probably now the "scandal" of TB because I INSISTED that people dance. I had little luck with the women...even considering and respecting cultual differences. But I am trusted enough to drag a few men out and assure them that if they can walk, they can dance :-) Without a trace of a "Mrs. Robinson" inclination ;-), I found that the sons of my friends, were willing to take a chance and young Jamaican men don't just "walk good"....they dance even better ! More to come from me. And Sasha, I hope you know what a wonderful night it was for me ! Marion |
Yay! Marion returns. I'm so glad to see your post. I thought of you frequently and wondered how you were enjoying yourself. Tiv tells us that you're already booked for next January.
Rest yourself and then treat us to one of your lovely trip reports. |
Welcome back, Marion! Funny, I was just thinking that you should be returning soon. Hope you had a wonderful vacation.
