Islands around Puerto rico
Hello all,

I will be visiting Puerto Rico in
the summer months for 3-4 days. I would also like to spend time at another destination close to Puerto Rico. Any suggestions which Islands is worth visiting? Also, any ideas
on all inclusive resorts around that area?

Thanx

I like Viaques. It has been in the news a bit lately, as half of the island has been used as a bombing range. I stayed at Inn of the Blue Horizon, which was outstanding. Also, they have a biolumenscent bay that is not to be missed.

By the way - don't take the ferry - take the commuter plane.

- Jim

We are going to Vieques inlate January and saying at a small inn called Casa Cielo. There are a couple of Vieques
Web sites that are great. There was an article in Travel & Leisure last spring with an extensive write up on the island that's how I became interested.I'll report bck to the forum after we get back on the 31st.

Someone suggested not to take a ferry to the Islands around Puerto Rico - WHY?

Can we do a day trip from the Dorado area to on of the islands? Does any companies offer this? (i.e. day trip with snorkelling & lunch).

How long does the ferry take and how much does it cost.

Also, how much to flights cost, return airfare?

Thank you very much for the help!

Lori

Lori, I recommended that you not take the ferry. I spoke with several locals prior to our trip, and they strongly recommended against the ferry -- they claimed that the ferries were always very crowded, very old, and none of the locals (who could afford it) took it. As I recall, the RT airfare was about $85USD PP. They are very small commuter airplanes, and it only takes about 10-15 minutes to get there.

As I recall (it was several years ago), the ferry was about $20pp RT and took about an hour each way.

-Jim

There is a web site for Vieques which is very helpful. www.vieques-island.com
You can get all your questions answered regarding the ferry as well as flights to the islands and rates on that sight. I believe it is less expensive to fly from Farjado then from San Juan to the islands.

If you have only 3 to 4 days to spend in Puerto Rico, it is a waste of time and there is no point in visiting Vieques or Culebra. These islands can only be appreciated by spending several days and they do not fit the taste of a lot of people. There are better places to see on the large island. Go to the caverns, the rain forest, old town or take a snorkeling trip. You have already used up your time. By the way the caverns are almost as good as Carlsbad in New Mexico.
