We stayed at Stonefield Resort, at the base of the Pitet Piton and I highly recommend it. It's much cheaper than Jalousie, you get your own private villa w/pool, yet all the villas have a common restaurant. And it's a 5 minute free shuttle to Jalousie's beach. The views and sunsets can't be beat.

It may not be as easy to get around road wise, but there is so much to do right by the pitons you don't really need to rent a car. We took the free shuttle to town, to the rainforest tour, to the drive through volcano, botanical gardens, as well as to Ladera for dinner and Jalousie's beach. We took a 5 minute water taxi ride from Jalousie's beach to Anse Chastenet for lunch and for the Anse La Raye Friday night fish fry (not to be missed).

I don't think you would be disappointed. Everyone is so friendly too!

Is this question limited to the Caribbean? What I think sounds like it would fit is someplace in Indonesia or Thailand maybe?

I'd spend a feww days on Saba - the jewel of the caribbean - for diving, hiking and the most spectacular scenary....then I'd head to Anguilla for the beach experience.....best of both!
