Is Passport Necessary to BVI?

We will be staying on St John in September and was wondering if you need a passport to take a day trip to the BVI or would a driver's license and birth certificate suffice?

If you are a US Citizen proof of citizenship is all that is required. A certified copy of the birth certificate is necessary although a passport will move you through customs and immigration easier. Bareboaters traveling on a charter from the BVI until recently could do so without a passport but that recently changed. If you do a charter, most will do the clearance for you. Your photo id and certified copy birth certificate (or naturalization papers) will be fine but passport is always better and necessary for other than US citizens.

I've flown in 5 times and no passport was required. I've taken the ferry from the USVI maybe 8 times and no passport was required.
I'm confident enough about that that I have never taken my passport with me to the BVI even though I have one.

Yes, you definitely need a passport or birth certificate w/driver's license when you go to the BVI's.

As you might imagine, things changed a bit after 9-11-01. The Exec Director of the BVI Chamber & Hotel Assn has posted on another boad advising that:

If arriving by air, the certified (or original) birth certificate and photo ID still works.

If arriving by ferry, a valid US Passport is required.

She does not mention what's needed if arriving by private boat. I'd be safe and take the passport.

Dave

Hello,

I work for a chartering company in St.Thomas and my husband is the captain of a BVI charter boat, and YES, YES, YES, you do need either:

A VALID PASSPORT or
BIRTHCERTIFICATE W/ PHOTO I.D

to clear in and out of both the British and US Customs & Immigrations. The charter companies will not take anyone without this information, so you don't want to forget it!

Hope this helps!
