Info about Lorient Beach on St Barths
 

Could someone tell me a little about Lorient Beach on St Barths? We are thinking of renting a villa right on the Beach and was wondering if that would be a good beach to be on. We're not familiar with it's location. Is it pretty? the water calm? rough? Which way does it face?...is it popular? Close to town?......etc. <BR>Thanks so much for the help. <BR>

L'orient is on the North a little to the east of center. The west end of the beach is much rockier than the east. It will take you less than 5 minutes to get to St Jean and less than 10 to get to Gustavia. The water is typically calm. The beach is busier on weekends than during the week as it is frequented by locals as well. If you go to <BR>http//st-barths.com/a_cam/index.html the web cam is set up looking down at L'orient.

I may be one of the few, but my husband and I thought Lorient was the least attractive beach on the island! It was really deserted when we were there also - although it was offseason. If you are looking for a beautiful beach - Flamands is the absolute - at least to me. It was stunningly beautiful - and from what I understand it is not visited a lot - which is wonderful if you want privacy. Just my opinion.

the tide can come up pretty fast-- we were in swimming in Lorient bay and came back to ....very wet stuff we left on the beach!

JB -- Is the water very calm at Flamands or are there big waves/tiny waves? Also, how is the clarity of the water? Is it more bluish/green or more blue? Thanks!

Flamands has small waves if any. I really didn't see too many big waves, at least by Atlantic Ocean standards. The water was crystal clear blue and the sand was like silk! It was probably the most beautiful beach I've ever been on!

Regarding the previous comment "Flamands Beach has amall waves if any", I must disagree. On our five previous visits to St. Barth, the surf on Flamand's Beach has always been on the rough side and I have never seen the water (what I would consider) calm on that beach.

We've been going to St. Barths for 15 years, once or twice a year. Flamands is a beautiful beach. The waves can be huge. I can attest to this as four weeks ago they were about 10 feet high (I'm not kidding) and last year over Xmas they were huge too. The beach is long, clean, uncrowded and beautiful, but keep in mind after noon the sun is behind the beach and you have to lie with your head towards the water on a slight downslope, rather than your feet pointing towards the water. Lorient is a lovely neighbourhood, but the beach is not the nicest, small and narrow. Don't rent a villa on the beach! Mosquitos are deadly and all beaches are public so privacy can be an issue. The nicest villas are in the hills. All the beaches are very easy to get to. Email if you have any questions. Happy Holidays.
