I loved Ponce
 

I recently returned from my first trip to Puerto Rico, and I was surprised and impressed by what I saw there. My favorite part of old San Juan was the Morro castle--truly remarkable. With its narrow steep streets and views of the harbor San Juan struck me as a miniature San Francisco. The best part of my trip was 3 days spent in Ponce. The Art Museum has the finest collection of English Pre-Raphaelite art in the Americas, but the quality of its holdings throughout was remarkable. And Ponce's architecture! A pastel colored dream. Visit its Music Museum, its Architecture Museum, and its History Museum for a great sampling. Stayed there at the Melia Hotel c. 1900 which was interesting. Glad I didn't have a room in its newer section cause the older rooms have more character even though they don't look over the plaza--it also has a dynamite restaurant (Marks, I believe). <BR> I rented a car to drive from San Juan to Ponce. I didn't know P.R. had such mountains! Or such intense drivers! You can almost feel the hatred from the car behind you if you don't keep up with traffic. Why the rush?? Anyway, I've travelled all over the world, but this was my first time to the islands--but it won't be the last. John

John, do you recommend any hotels in Ponce? We will be in Puerto Rico over the holiday week. We are considering staying in Ponce, but are open to other options. We are looking for a really nice hotel or condo on a beautiful beach with a casino nearby or on the property. Thanks.

Yes, I know the perfect spot for you. It's called the Ponce Hilton and Casino. Beautifully designed hotel right on the beach. But since it's not in town, I'd also recommend taking a taxi (it's only about 5-6 miles into Ponce)to the main plaza and walk around from there. Melia Hotel on the square has the best restaurant in town. I bet you could make a reservation through hilton's site (www.hiltons.com) Enjoy!

Thank you, John. We finally found a website with some pictures of the Ponce Hilton. Since we want to explore the southern coast area, I think we will stay there for most of our trip and then spend a few days at the end of our trip in San Juan which will be closer to the airport. Has anyone stayed at the Pnce Hilton? Any tips on sights to see and things to do using Ponce as our base?

You didn't mention the spectacular red and black striped firehouse!!! I hope you didn't miss it. A true find!
