I AM LOOKING FOR A SMALL QUIET ISLAND WITH GREAT BEACHES

I am in search of a smaller island, plenty of the best beaches, maybe some kayaking, fishing. Relaxing nights, no big parties, not too many people, no screaming kids. Been to the Bahamas, PR, the BVI. I would like to try something different. A must is beautiful beaches and no major developments/resorts.

Have you thought about the Grenadines: Bequia, Mustique?

RichF May 6th, 2002 09:16 AM

ANGUILLA and/or ST. JOHN!!!

Anguilla and St. John, have the most exceptional beaches, than any islands in the Caribbean- hands down! I can name at least ten beaches each on Anguilla & St. Johns that are better than most islands put together.

Anguilla: Meads Bay, Mundays Bay, Shoal Bay East, Rendervous Bay, Cove Bay, Shoal West, Little Bay, Coicus Bay.

St.Johns: Trunk Bay, Cinnimmon Bay, Hawksnest Bay, Maho Bay, Gibney Bay, Caneel Bay, Scotts Bay, Turtle Bay Honeymoon Bay, Solomon Bay.

I second the vote for St. John, USVI. There are maybe two major resorts there, but you won't notice them. This island is just so green!

Another idea is Vieques off the coast of Puerto Rico. Just make sure the Navy isn't doing any exercises!

Jill May 6th, 2002 09:34 AM

Brad, Rich hit it on the nail. I have been to both St. John and to Anguilla.
They are nice. Mustique would be nice but very $$$$$$. Of the two I would choose Anguilla over St. Johns.

Statia May 6th, 2002 10:25 AM

Another vote for Anguilla.

Kat May 6th, 2002 11:42 AM

Anguilla, absolutely!

Lyn May 6th, 2002 11:56 AM

Positively Anguilla!

tammy May 6th, 2002 12:55 PM

Since you said "A must is beautiful beaches and no major resorts" then Anguilla is definitely out of the question, since it has resorts like Cap that sprawl along the beach. I think St. John would be a good choice as long you don't mind an Americanized experience with little real Carib feel.

Here's not one, but two that fit the bill:

Marie-Galante
Terre de Haut, Les Saintes

Both can be accessed by plane or boat from Guadeloupe.

Susan May 7th, 2002 05:07 AM

Hi Brad. Go to Anguilla. It is exactly what you are looking for. We fell in love with the island. Enjoy!

Kat May 7th, 2002 08:02 AM

--no major resorts

Anguilla has no major resorts. Cap Juluca has only 65 or so rooms and suites spread out in 18 two-story villas on a mile-long beach. Hardly what you'd call high density.

Anne May 7th, 2002 08:24 AM

Anguilla.
Terrific beaches, quiet, friendly people.
Bring your own fishing rods, sunblock and books to read.
You can charter boats to take you deep sea fishing, but I've no idea how much they are. One such company is run by Garfield Richardson, his boats leave from Sandy Ground.
You can avoid the high end resorts like Cap Juluca, Cove Castles and Malliouhana and still have wonderful place to stay. In fact, you might get a better feel for the island and the people by staying at a more mid-range hotel.
Great beach and fishing also on the outer keys, especially Prickley Pear.

Brad, Eleuthera Bahamas has no major resorts, plenty of beaches, never a crowd, easy to get to from the US. email for more info,,,,Doug

Brad,
The place is Anguilla. My wife & I went there 12 years ago for the 1st time & now we go every year. There are fancy resorts but they are not big and as others have stated they have the most beautiful beaches in the Carribean and some very excellent resturants.

Sandra May 8th, 2002 04:17 AM

Not much guarantee about kids unless you're traveling to a couples resort. If you want quiet and small then the islands of St. Kitts or Nevis (7 mins. flight time between islands) would be interesting. If you like to hike there are rainforests that guides will take you thru. Check Fodors online destination guides for lodging--for travelers comments click on "User Rating" by hotel description.

May I suggest perhaps the perfect resort for you as long as it is not in Summer--the quiet resort of Copamarina Beach Resort in Guanica, Puerto Rico (S.W.). It is located by a dry rainforest--activities include fishing, eco-tours, diving etc. Recipes from resort have won awards. Check out their website--copamarina.com.

If you are looking for small islands...Turks and caicos it is.
If you are looking for First Class rated beaches....Turks and Caicos it is again.
As far as most quiet....no parties. Middle caicos (only 250 residence...largest Island in Turks and Caicos on only 1 resort of 6 room in total and 2 guest house)
Faster Pace than that...then Try North Caicos...second largest in the Turks an Caicos Island....6 vacation accomodation place including 2 hotel.
Develop finally start to happen...Still in the proposal stages.
And if you want more than that
Then Grand Turk
...More....PRovidenciales
Even as providenciales is the fastest pace in the Turk and caicos it is still slow compared to other caribbean islands
