Hurricane Dean - Virgin Islands
My husband and I are flying into St. Thomas tomorrow and were supposed to ferry over to Jost Van Dyke to spend four nights at Sandcastle and then ferry over to Virgin Gorda to spend five nights at Little Dix Bay.
As some of you know from an earlier posting, Sandcastle cancelled our reservation two days ago due to the threat of Dean. We assumed when Dean turned south that Sandcastle would reinstate our reservation, but they will not.
Then we tried to book White Bay Villas on Jost, and while I was in the middle of booking the reservation over the phone, the booking agent spoke with the manager at White Bay Villas who said to discourage us from coming. He said that even though they aren't taking a hit that the seas will be way up, the wind and rain will be bad and that he anticipates everything on Jost will close and that the ferries may not run at all.
So, Jost is out. Now we are thinking about heading over to Caneel Bay (we stayed there on our honeymoon seven years ago - this is actually our anniversary trip!) to spend the first four nights before Little Dix Bay, but with what the manager at White Bay Villas said, I'm concerned that the ferries won't run between Red Hook and Cruz Bay. Does anyone on island right now have any sense of what is going to happen? How is the weather? How are the seas? Do you expect the ferries to run tomorrow afternoon?

Becca, I'm sorry but trying to predict what the seas will be like tomorrow or whether the ferries will be running is just impossible. Friends on Tortola right now say the winds are strong & gusty and the seas are quite rough. There's been some beach errosion in places around the island BUT the sun is shinning. Chances are the breezes will die down as Dean moves further into the Western Caribbean but the swells can last somewhat longer just how long is anyone's guess. I wish I could give you more encouring news but there are just no hard and fast "rules" when it comes to predicting these types of conditions. It will be what it will be. Typically the weather is clear and stable for several days after a major storm passes through the area - the seas, however, are another matter.

This is a bummer. I feel for you. My husband and I had a trip to Aruba ruined by Ivan.
The lesson I learned is to buy travel insurance. If you need to cancel, you can, and take your trip some other time.

Hope Becca made it. Just read that the last ferry between Red Hook and Cruz Bay was at 6 tonite. Maybe when she gets back she'll let us know how it went!
If you buy insurance check and compare policies carefully. There are specific limitations on many as to what you can cancel for - the planes cancelled or the destination is uninhabitable or closed. Even evacuation costs are somewhat limited in many policies.
You can't just decided that you don't want to go because one is in the pipeline!

Well, we made it into St. Thomas (though had some of the worst turbulence I've ever experienced about an hour before landing). We then took the Red Hook ferry to St. John and we are staying at Caneel Bay for two nights before we reevaluate trying to make it to Jost. The seas were definitely up, and I don't think I would have been comfortable on a ferry from St. Thomas all the way to Jost today. Fifteen minutes from Red Hook to Cruz Bay was enough for me! We are having fun and making the best of the change of plans. Maybe we'll make it over to Jost on Sunday to spend a couple of nights before heading to Virgin Gorda on Tuesday or maybe not - it will all depend on the seas.
