How safe is Bermuda?

I am planning a trip to Bermuda for June 2007. I have always heard about the pink sands and how beautiful and peaceful Bermuda is.

I recently started reading up on the country and discovered not only that it is a beautiful country, but...that the crime rate has been steadily escalating in that country.

I was thinking about renting a moped, but saw that tourists on mopeds seem to be targeted.

Has anyone here been to Bermuda recently? Have you rented a moped? Did you feel safe there?
Is that country still reasonably safe?

I appreciate your answers. I am a newbie on here.

Not sure where you are getting your information but we just got back from Bermuda in June and felt incredibly safe no matter where we went and no matter what time of day or night it was. Of course we didn't walk alone down dark alleys in the wee hours of the morning but than anyone who does is only asking for trouble. The locals are very friendly and helpful.

We didn't rent mopeds (we are a bit too old for that) but they are the mai source of transportation for about 90% of the tourists (the others like us used taxis). I never saw any evidence thattourists on mopeds were being "targeted", in fact, it's just the opposit - the locals seem to go out of their way to give the moped riders a wide berth. The island does have a lot of traffic and the roads are narrow so you do have to exercise care while driving mopeds (especially if you are not used to driving on the left. Use common sense, obey the traffic rules and signs, don't speed and you'll be just fine.

Crime seems to escalating in many places. Alas, nowhere is completely safe. But the thing to remember about Bermuda is that it is far (really out in the middle of the ocean with nothing, not even another island nearby). And it's not a very big island. If you commit a crime, where the heck can you hide? I have never even felt remotely threatened or uncomfortable re: the locals. Some tourists seemed to be a bit sketchy, but for the most part, it is a fairly quiet place focused on the promotion of tourism and business. But wherever you go in this world, I think you need to keep your wits about you.

I too have been reading about the rising crime rate in Bermuda with some amount of sadness. One blog I've been following is "A Limey in Bermuda" http://www.limeyinbermuda.com/latest...der/index.html
Arawak, you can check out this site. He doesn't really sugar coat anything.

It seems like such a nice place, but I guess nowhere is safe anymore. It used to be that the only place you'd hear about this kind of thing was Jamaica. Now...it seems that everywhere is getting as bad as Jamaica. :(

Thanks for the reassurance ATraveller.

I have not seen that site JAGIRL. I will check it out. I read about the crime on the Bermuda4u website. http://www.bermuda4u.com/Essential/bermuda_dangers.html

It will not prevent me from going to Bermuda. I just wanted to know how bad the crime really is...or if the escalating crime rate is really just exaggeration/media hype.
