How much spending $$$ you think???

Me and my boyfriend are planning a 6 day last minute trip to San Juan (probably in late March). We are both college students and are on a small budget. The hotel we're staying at is not estravagent and we plan on spending most of our time on the beach. I was told by someone who lives in Puerto Rico that everything is cheap and not to bring too much. How much do you think would be a good amount considering all we'd really use it for is food, transportation and occassional tours?! Thanks for any help!

It's really not a good place for a small budget. There's no bus service to speak of between cities and prices for hotels are very high for what you get. Mexico would be better for your purpose. Gp

I have to agree with Greg1. I have not found PR to be inexpensive. I recently stayed there for 3 days only. All entrees in most restaurants are 18.00 plus. There are several fast food establishments which could come in handy. I think with tours you would need at least $100.00 a day. I would think that is cutting it close. I think I would ask your friend who lives there where to eat, perhaps since your friend is a local and lives there he/she could better advise you on how much to bring. There are always ways to economize.

Definitely agree with Greg1 and diann. I like Puerto Rico and the people are fantastic. But I found getting around and eating out expensive. Last time I was there, I stayed at a nice little hotel that included breakfast for about $50 a night. If you are staying in San Juan, the public bus system in the city is the best deal. Going out of San Juan is another story. Remember, they have to import a lot of items; although you will be able to find any items you could buy in a mainland drugstore, the items will be more expensive. If you are on a budget, I would bring basic toiletries from home. Meals are quite expensive.<BR>Will San Juan be your base? Where else on the island were you thinking of going?

It's unbelievable - first place I've seen out of 21 countries that doesn't have intercity bus transport. That, with the poor value of hotels, will probably keep me from going back, although the forests are nice (the beaches are a lot like Florida).
