How did the other 600 islands come up with theirs?

Didn't Colombus name most of them?

seems to me I remember hearing some folk lore that the islands looked like Turk's turbans to the explorers and that's why they are called that. Caicos I don't remember. Many of the islands were named by explorers because of the landmarks they offered, Virgin Gorda, or were known by the names of people who lived there or owned the island, Jost van Dyke, etc. there are all the saints as well. Think that Tortola was "tortogua" orignally or whatever the Spanish is for "turtle."

The Islands were named from the barrel-shaped Turks Head cactus which reminds one of a Turkish fez and the Spanish word "cayos" for small islands.
