Not positive but do think that the Westin uses the Limnos boats for the transportation. They are larger and not what one usually thinks of when one thinks of the little water taxis that accomodate 4 - 6 people that are available.

Just got back from a week at the Westin St. John, and took their water 'taxi', it's really a pretty big boat, with seating up top, down below, and on the main deck...I'd say you could fit 80-100 people..

Sharon,
It was our first time to the Caribbean, and we loved it. We went to Kauai for our honeymoon in 2000, and we really like the quieter/less developed islands.
The Westin was fine, there are quite a few mixed reviews out there, but we had no complaints. We did get our room through Priceline, so for $100/night, how can you complain about anything?
The beach is just ok, so definitely get out and explore the rest of the island. If you don't want to rent a car, the taxis at the lobby will take you anywhere. We ate in Cruz bay every night, didn't have a bad meal anywhere. We didn't spend too much time at the hotel, but it didn't seem crowded at all, until the day before we left when a convention arrived.
Although we typically ended each day at the hotel for sunset, they have one of the better views on the island. Plus the pool bar has happy hour from 4-6, $2 beers/well drinks. The pool is huge and chairs are plentiful---there is a big trampoline in the water right off the beach, and plenty of rafts to drift around on.
I recommend the sunset sail on Spree with Captain Bob, he leaves out of Cruz Bay at 4:30, and when we went, it was just my husband and myself, no one else signed up!
Let me know if you have any other questions, you're going to have a great time!
Trish

thanks for the scoop trish... sounds fun.. we can't wait. two quick questions for you... how often do the cruise ship folks come into town? when i look on the schedule it looks like St. John is listed only every 3rd or 4th day. do they come over when dropped in st. thomas? also, did you see lots of ATMs in cruz bay? thanks for the info. sharon

Sharon:
As for the Cruise ship people, the only time we saw them was at Trunk Bay, and someone said to go early, so we went there by 9AM and were leaving aroun 1PM, and that's when the cruise ship people were arriving. I am pretty sure that Trunk Bay is their main stop, so just go in the morning and you should be ok.
As for ATM's, there is one in the Westin lobby, and a couple of banks in Cruz bay---really easy to locate.
Have fun!!

Nope, but assume you mean the Westin's launch between the Westin and Red Hook on St. Thomas. Public ferry runs hourly and is 15 minute ride. Ferry to CA is about every couple of hours. No ferry/launch between Cruz Bay and the Westin.
