You might want to reconsider visiting Cuba. It's not safe. A 26 year old Dane was shot to death by Cuban troops for wandering into a restricted area which was not clearly marked. Here's what his parents had to say:

A FINAL NOTE FROM THE FAMILY OF JOACHIM OGNER LOVSCHALL ~Terrorism occurs all over the world and is carried out by terrorists. In Cuba, inhumane and inexcusable acts of lawlessness and injustice are carried out, not by terrorists, but by the Cuban government. Jyllands-Posten -

I highly recommend Hotel Inglaterra in Old Havana and Hotel Nacional. Stay away from Hotel Plaza; the restaurant-staff there tried to manipulate my credit card. Generally there is much less violence in Cuba than e.g. in USA. But begging and theft is widespread. After bombs in Hotels in Havana (probably placed by exil cubans) the police seems to be more nervous. So be careful. My impression is that the police also is corrupt. But Cuba is a beautiful country and Havana is a most interesting city. People are friendly, but are also trying as best as they can to
get dollar from you. Have a nice trip!

Nils

Nils is mistaken. The killing of JOACHIM OGNER LOVSCHALL took place before the bombings of the hotels. If you visit the article you'll also find other cases of innocent tourists murdered by Cuban security forces. If you desire visiting a country where the military occasionaly takes pot shots at tourists Cuba is the place for you.

Ask the German or the English families how they felt after their kin was shot in Miami! Tom PATRICK.

Ronald Nov 12th, 1997 08:19 PM

Tom: street crime and crime by the state are obviously not comparable and your attempt to do so is obviously inspired by bias.

Tom Nov 14th, 1997 06:47 PM

Ronald, now you tell me!!!Just got back from Miami!!Tom.

Ronald Nov 14th, 1997 06:58 PM

Tom: now I understand. I don't have the courage to visit Miami myself but I sure think there have to be better alternatives than Havana. Well, your choice I guess. Try West Los Angeles for thrills and chills combined with sunshine.

Ronald Nov 14th, 1997 07:02 PM

Tom: correction: East L.A.

Tom Patrick Nov 16th, 1997 12:16 PM

We all know that Miami is not the safest place in the world, however, you seem to take delight in bashing the US. what is it with you? Are you jealous that you don't live in the USA?

Joey Nov 16th, 1997 01:38 PM

Hi Joey, maybe your right! But I dont "BASH" Americans.I visit there all the time, but its my right to go to Cuba OR America IF I want to.Cheers,Tom.

Joey Nov 16th, 1997 03:04 PM

Hey tom, you supercilious jackass, let me bring out a few facts that you are ignorant of. First, Miami was a safe place until we stupidly thinking that we were being helpful took in Cuban crimainals. Next, you as a Canadaian, ought to kiss the American flsg every time you see it because without it your dead economy would be even moreso. Thanks to companies such as GM you survive. And, sometime, explain why your people stream over to the American side to buy our goods. Your dollar is not worth a merde (that is French, you know) compared to ours. Also, why is it that when canadians want decent medical treatment, the ones that can affor it cross over to the US? The reason that you like Castro is that you are probably as much of a Socialist as he is. And, if it were not for us, yur precious queen would speaking German as would you. I number many Canadians among my 0personal friens, but people like you are truly pathetic. Every day, Tom, get out your prayer rug, face south and be thankful that we are here to save your derriere (that is also French, you bigot)

Tom Nov 16th, 1997 03:26 PM

Joey,Joey,A scotsman gave you the finest navy in the world and a canadian started G.M.So you know what to do with your prayer rug!Tom.

joey Nov 16th, 1997 03:38 PM

Correction Tom, They were US people who knew where here talents would be appreciate. Get out the rug.

Jan Nov 16th, 1997 03:51 PM

How about just staying from Cuba because El Nino says it is going to rain until spring anyway.

Tom Nov 16th, 1997 04:28 PM

Here is my last statement,I am not a socialist.I respect ALL peoples beliefs.I am lucky that I have friends of many denominations and nationalities.Roland said that being a scotsman(canadian by choice)was irrevelant, not true!Being an nation that was sold out to another nation,(NOT CONQUERED)gives MOST SCOT/CANADIAN,canadian the FREE will to make the choices THEY want.I choose to go to CUBA on vacation and also go to America OR any where else MY money will take me.That is my democratic right! so there.TOM.

Ronald Nov 16th, 1997 05:34 PM

Joey, Tom is within his rights as a citizen of Canada to go anywhere his country's laws permit. I'm as good an American as most but I don't see how civilized discourse is encouraged by vilifying, with juvenile patriotic jingoism, another country and a friendly one at that. I'd like to remind you of something most Americans have forgotten. When the US Embassy in Tehran was captured by the Iranians in the '80's there were a number of Americans who were in danger of their lives in Tehran and it was Canadians who sheltered them at great risk to their own lives. Next time you want to vent your anger at these friendly neighbors who merely want to express their independence, as do we, remember this and control yourself. Crime in Miami has a lot of causes including the poverty in some sections. The US should be proud of its long record of helping those in danger and fleeing their own country's tyrants. The Cuban criminals were sent over by Castro who is the real source of the problem and never forget it. The Scots are a noble people who have given much to the world for such a small population and they really have a history of standing up for their rights and independence - they did much to settle the US if you would take the trouble to look into it. And, I don't think Canada has a queen any longer - the Prime Minister was the highest official the last time I looked. So, ease up on Tom and try to use the facts to persuade those who disagree with us. The ugly American is exemplified by those of us who think they can take personal credit for the accomplishments, such as they are, of the US. The fact is, though, that we inherited the fruits created by millions who preceded us and we were darn lucky to have been born where we were and we can't take any credit for that!
