Where to stay in PR before cruise

We are going on a cruise in December which commences in Puerto Rico. We are arriving in PR one day prior to the start of the cruise(in case it snows in the Midwest.) What part of San Juan should we stay in to be near the cruise ship docks? Hotel recommendations would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Stay in Old San Juan, umless you MUST have casinos. My favorite "boutique" hotel is ElConvento. Worth the cost as it is a historic building and quite romantic. It is also very close to the cruise docks.

elconvento.com

L

Avoid the Wyndham, it was a dump when we stayed there after our cruise.

The closest hotels are in Old San Juan - Wyndham Old San Juan is the closest to the docks. El Convento is relatively close to the docks and a budget hotel close to the docks is the Milano.

Have to disagree with anon - we've stayed at the Wyndam Old San Juan several times and it is NOT a dump. It also has the advantage of being across the street from the cruise ship docks. I would stay there again. Large room, nicely decorated, very clean and the staff were friendly and helpful.

Charlotte,

Not all cruise ships berth at the Old San Juan piers. The hotels mentioned in the posts to this point are all in Old San Juan and will be closest if your ship is docked there. But if not, the Condado area will be just as close and will add some more hotel options...Condado Plaza, Marriott, etc. Might be best to check with your cruise line first to find out which pier your ship will use.

When you say they Wyndham was a dump are you referring to the El Conquistador?? I am staying there in Nov. early Dec. for a wedding. Everyone says it is so wonderful. The wedding party has chosen for the guests to stay there. I hope it is not the same one.

The El Conquistador is not in San Juan, xxx. I'm sure you will enjoy your stay there.

As concerns the Wyndham in Old San Juan near the docks - it is not a dump. When we stayed there several years ago, we had a large, lovely suite with a little balcony. But being near the docks, the area did attract some seedy folks in the evening. I would not necessarily choose to stay there again, but it is definitely not a dump.

Lannie, no you are right it is in Farjoardo, (mis-spelled) something like that. Well thank goodness. It didn't look like a dump to me on the web page. Thanks for responding.
