Holy Week in D.R.

Was all set to book 1 week in Punta Cana around Easter and was warned everything shuts down in the dominican that week for Easter. Is this true? Pls. advise. Thx.

Debbie - I have been making inquiries on the Dominican Republic in general....my impression is that water sports are non-existent during Holy Week and that many of the shops in the smaller towns are shut down; however, the cities are a bit more revenue conscious and the larger places are still operating at full tilt.

The entire island shuts down during the week of Easter. Dominicans are on the beaches...not Tourists. :)

I stayed at the Gran Ventana during Easter Week-end last year and the resort was very crowded with locals. It is their only holiday and they spend their vacation at the resorts. There was so many children you could hardly find room in the pools, however they are very friendly and courteous.

It depends on if you're going the week before or after Easter. I'm going April 18 and contacted the resort I'm staying at. They said the restrictions run from April 12-15.
