Hirring private liscenced driver/guide in Ocho Rios. Any advice?

My girlfriend and I are planning to hire a liscenced private driver/guide for about a day and a half through the hotel contacts in Ocho Rios to take us around to the sites and different beaches on our own schedule. I heard this was the way to go if you didn't want to go with the organized tours.

-What should I expect to pay for say an 8 hour day. Even if we go back for an afternoon nap and go out again?
-What does "liscenced" mean? I mean what credentials should I check for?
-Anybody have any other advice on the subject?

I've been to Jamaica many times and hired many drivers. (never had a poor experience by the way) Assuming you're staying at a resort, ask them to recommend a driver for you. (try to get a small van so you have more room and a better view) I would expect to pay at least $100 for a full day of driving and or waiting......for a driver worth their salt anyway.

If you will be staying at any resort in the area you will have no trouble locating one. Just make sure you dicker on a good deal. Most resorts have drivers that they use. You will see these guys parked at or close to the resort. BTW, make sure you visit Murphy Hill...any driver will know how to get there. Also Shaw Park Gardens is a must.

E-mail Carolyn Barrett at [email protected] -- THE top licensed/certified guide on island for her sampler. She also works with The Ritz and cruiseshippers and might well be a better alternative to hotel guides.

Prices that I've gotten very recently for a private driver for a full day are about $140-$150. If you can swing it, it would be well worth it over a "canned" resort tour. Some of these guides are terrific!
