Hiking in St. Kitts/Nevis
As I have been reading info on St. Kitts/Nevis, it appears the advice is that a guide is a must have for the volcano hikes on either island.
As a whole, I prefer to hike without a guide, so wanted to see what other hikes folks think are fine to do on these islands without a guide.

Hi awayfromitall
Like you, we prefer to do our own thing, but by far the best experience for us in the rainforest was with a guide. We used Gregs Safaris, but there are others to chose from. The advantage was that a) Greg was passionate about the forest, and it was fascinating finding out about it b) he knew where has was going! sounds obvious but the rainforest is a big place and with very thick undergrowth it would have been really easy to get lost
We did find a path behind Romney Manor which takes you up the riverbed into the forest which was easy to do on our own and was a wonderful experience. I also think there is a path behind Ottleys which takes you up towards the volcanoe
If you're looking for somewhere to stay off the beaten track , we stayed a this lovely villa on the South Peninsula

You don't say if you are going to St. Kitts or Nevis. If you are going to Nevis, there is a self-guided walk that begins at Golden Rock Plantation. It doesn't go as far as the volcano though. Look at their website for more information.
It is not recommended that people hike to the volcano without a guide. It's not like a forest area here in the U.S. where trails are marked and fairly easy to follow. We've taken walks with Oliver Spencer in St. Kitts. He's a wonderful source of information on the plants, birds, trees, etc. that you will see. In addition you get to learn something about the culture and people.

Petroglyphics are easy to find - no trail necessary. They are located about 75' off of a paved road. They are well marked on a map you can get from your hotel concierge, car rental company or at the Tourist Bureau.
