Help us to select an island
I will be in Puerto Rico for a work-related event in mid-June, and my family (wife and 2 college aged daughters) will join me. Afterwards, we plan to visit one more island for 5 to 7 days. It will be our first time in the Caribbean, and I am overwhelmed by choices. Please help us to select.
What we like: 1) Beautiful, pristine scenery 2) Less developed, laid back 3) Good snorkeling off the beach 4) Beyond resort: opportunity to explore history and culture 5) Interaction with friendly people proud of their heritage 6) Good food (3 of us do not eat meat but we all love fish) 7) Not too hot / humid 8) Some contrast to Puerto Rico We are not into shopping and nightlife, definitely not AI. I am currently thinking about Barbados, although it seems a fairly developed (and rather expensive) island. |
Virgin Gorda sounds like it would be a good match..and not far from PR.
|
There's also Vieques and Culebra - both just off the coast of Puerto Rice and both very different - they offer everything on your list.
|
I would think St. John would be a good choice and easy to get to from PR. But also, mentioned above is the islands just off the coast of PR (part of PR still) Vieques and Culebra.

Anguilla....

St. John!
Read Tuxedocat's trip report. |
Grenada meets all the expectations you have outlined...the snorkeling is the least of the list but the others hit it out of the park so if you can be ok with taking a snorkeling trip rather than off the beach you wont be disappointed in the island of Grenada...
Goodluck! |
Oh I agree with Caribheart, Grenada hits the stuff on your list. For most of us on the mainland, it is difficult to get to Grenada due to coordinating flight schedules which makes for a very long travel day. But seeing as how you'll already be in Puerto Rico, there is a flight on certain days between SJU and GND.
