I agree Grand Cayman is not an island for much culture or sight-seeing and is not cheap. But you think Tortola and Harbour Island are gonna have much in the way of culture and sight-seeing???

Grand Cayman was real nice, but there was something about it I did not like. Oh yea, Its freaking america! Buisnessmen in suits walking around, nicely painted, perfect buildings. It was NOT the caribbean. Crap houses, people walking around with braids yelling YA MON. Its also flat and pretty expensive. SMB was always crowded and was no better than many other int he caribbean. It also has no culture or sight seeing.
I respect that Sandy likes Cayman, but I would not reccomend it to everyone like she does.

To answer the question in this thread, in my opinion anywhere on Seven Mile Beach on Grand Cayman would make a great destination for any beach purist, and after visiting many islands in search of the best beaches, it's my favorite in the Caribbean. But I could easily give you a big list of the negatives and positives about Cayman, just like any of the other countries I've visited. Those who criticize Cayman are doing us true Cayman fans a favor, cause the less people that visit, the more pristine it will stay for us. Obviously some of what is posted here on boards like this is intentional and unintentional misinformation. C'est la vie!

I can't beleive that no one mentioned the dominican republic - i go at least 2-3 times a year. my kids are 1 & 3 - and we all love it. bavaro is our fav -right next to punta cana. lots of europeans travel there, which makes it more interesting. "natives" (my hubby is one) are wonderful, food at the iberostar and melia - very good. there's some tours, lots of water sports, golf, etc. although we just chill all week in the beautiful sea. Did the same in Caymans, and must admit 7 mile beach is beautiful. Jamaica is scary (and i'm from nyc)!!!!saw some terrible things there - really dangerous - but the island is beautiful - lush and green with lots of fun things to do. I went when i was single and would never go back again. st. john is another beautiful spot with lots of hiking and snorkling.
