help on which caribbean island

My husband and I are looking to plan our next vacation. We have been on four cruises and are wanting to try and all inclusive in the caribbean. What is important to us is beautiful beaches and shopping. Do not care about nightlife. We loved St. Thomas, St. John., St. Martin. Hated Jamaica and Mexico. Any ideas?? thanks!!!!!!

Don't overlook Sandals Antigua as it has a nice beach property and the downtown area has good shopping. Lots of sightseeing, as well. Shirley Heights, which was named for the Governor of the Leeward Islands in the eighteenth century, has partially restored it's fort of the harbour's observation post. The view of the Caribbean sea is breathtaking and there is a Sunday afternoon celebration with barbecues, steel drum bands and rum punch.

Aruba has great shopping and great beaches. They do have some AI'S but also have alot of good restaurants if AI is not etched in stone.

I agree with jacketwatch, for my money, the best island is Aruba. After our first trip there, we were so taken we went back again the next year. Perfect weather, (trade winds keep it very comfortable), incredibly good shopping and the best food I have had in the caribbean. Lots of sights to see, no crime, no hawkers and very friendly locals. It is a very small island with a very cosmoplitan side (where all the hotels are) and a very rugged side, (locals call it the "wild" side). I don't think there are many all-inclusives there, mostly because excellent restaurants are so plentiful, but if you are not locked into this option, this island has some very reasonable packages, and is easily one of the all-around best islands.

Grenada (Grande Anse beach is not to be missed) and Provo (in the Turks and Caicos, Grace Bay) would suit you quite nicely.

I'll throw this out as an idea. You've already said that you loved St. Thomas and St. John. Why not stay at a place like Caneel Bay on St. John ( great beaches ) and do your shopping on St. Thomas via ferry?

sandals antigua is a great place, if you've never been to Antigua. I actually would prefer Jumby Bay (higher end AI). Depends on your budget. Sandals has a great beach/view and the gardens are very lush/tropical all around the resort. There are plenty of activities and the food/drinks/service was always good. There is shopping in St. John's and the Sunday party at Shirley Heights.
