I don't think there's anything cheap in the Red Hook area.

There are two inexpensive hotels on Lindbergh Bay near the airport - Carib Beach and Island Beachcomber.

There are several inexpensive places in and around Charlotte Amalie - Crystal Palace, Mafolie, Island View Guest House, Villa Santana, others I can't remember. Holiday Inn in C/A is also reasonable and very near the ferry dock.

You can take the ferry from Charlotte Amalie to St. John without going to Red Hook.

Might want to check out Cabrita Point. Might run in the $100 - $125 range but check with them.

You don't say when you're going.
There is a best western Emerald Beach/Carib? or something that is ok and just a minute from the airport. The cab ride to town from the airport can't be more than 10-15 minutes. To red hook from town is I'd guess 20 min depending on if the cruise ships are in. My son lives there and has put up people reasonably at the Mafolie and another one called Hotel 1829. They are reasonable and in town. I agree, I'd also take the ferry from town rather than trucking all the way to RedHook.

We, too, are going to be flying into ST.T. before going to St. John. Ihave lately been wondering how this will all shake out -- I am guessing that if you don't get into St. Thomas early enough in the day, and by the time you get a jeep and groceries (do you buy them in St. Thomas?)you might miss the ferry. I am afraid we will be paying for a place in St. John that we will not be able to reach. Is that your reason? When does the ferry quit running? Do you have a recommendation of a place to stay on St. John and will you rent your vehicle and buy groceries before going to St. John?

I was in a similar situation needing a place to stay the night before and after our 7 night stay on St John. I ended up bidding on Priceline for St Thomas/St John, resort/4* category. I got the Renaissance Grand Beach Resort for $113 per night plus tax.

To the poster above, most people stay in St. Thomas the night before going or the night after coming from St. John because they are renting from Saturday to Saturday and they get better rates flying in the day before. On the way out, the flight may be too early to catch, traveling from St. John. I operate Crystal Palace, and I get these folks all the time. This Friday I have a handful coming in for that purpose! I pick them up at the airport and sometimes am able to drop them to the dock.
Some do some shopping here before heading over, especially those who rent cars.
Ronnie
