Help for which island please?

Hi We (couple in 60's) had planned on going to Cuba from Miami in October. However, with the possible new prohibitive regulations for travel from USA we have decided to abandon that idea. So...

We would like to spend one week in one of the Caribbean (or near) islands. Our criteria for this break includes:
1. Must have direct flight from Miami, return

2. Somewhere very quiet....we would be happy to simply have accommodation by a nice beach...but preferably not a resort

3. We realise it is the hurricane season and so prefer a less likely hurricane prone area

We would hire a car to see any sights.

Are we asking the impossible?

Many thanks Bil

If you are willing to make some minor adjustments you are not asking the impossible. there are scores of islands and small hotels that meet most of your criteria. And just so you know, you can find "nice beaches" on just about every island so start with trying to select your island first the look for a hotel that meets your needs and budget.

In the Bahamas look at Eleuthera, Exuma, Cat island, Long Island, the Abacos to name a few.

Also look at Providenciales in the Turks & Caicos.

Other islands you can reach non-stop from Miami include: Grand Cayman, St. Thomas, St. Martin, St. Croix, St. Kitts, Antigua, Barbados, St. Lucia, Aruba and Curacao. Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and Jamaica are also accessible non-stop from Miami but they are very big islands so may not offer the "quiet" you are seeking.

You'll find that just about any island you can reach non-stop from Miami will be a relatively busy island, however, once you decide on the island you wish to visit you should have no difficulty in finding a smaller boutique hotel that will offer the quite and seclusion you are seeking.

The further south you go, the less likely the island will be exposed to a hurricane BUT NOWHERE in the Caribbean is guaranteed to be hurricane free.

What is your budget for accommodations and what is your budget for airfare? It would be helpful if you could give a separate specific dollar range for each of the items.

What type of activities interest you?

What type of island do you envision - a mountainous island with lush rainforests and smaller cove like dark sand beaches, a flat arid island with long strands of white sand beaches, a hilly island with golden sand beaches????
