HELP -What is reasonable airfare to St. Martin?
We are traveling to St. Martin on 9/21 and returning 9/28. What are reasonable airfares from the midwest (ie, Indy, Cincinnati, Louisville?) Right now, the cheapest I found is $714. Should I book now, or will they become cheaper during the summer!

I live in Washington DC and found the fares to be very high from here, too. I am planning on booking a flight to Puerto Rico for $250, then a flight to St. Croix for $150, which will be a substantial savings. Maybe you can find a similar savings flying this way...

Travelling from the midwest, I would consider $714 to be too expensive for September. If you are willing to check everyday for sales, you will undoubtedly find something better. The website www.cheapcaribbean.com often offers good consolidator fares on US Airways to St Martin. (Currently $589 from Indianapolis - SXM on your dates.)

That's a rip off for that time of year. US Air flies directly from Cincinnati to SXM (St. Maarten). You may also want to re-consider the time frame. That's hurricane season. Better off waiting til November after hurricane season and just before the Holiday season. You'll get better savings and better weather. Hope this helped. BTW, St. Martin doesn't have an International airport. Try SXM (St. Maarten) dutch side. Maybe that was the problem with the cost?

Can't say I agree with the above.
Two reasons fares have been so high are that many carriers have either stopped or reduced service to the Caribbean during the past year, and many Americans have cancelled trips to Europe/Asia etc in favor of trips to the Caribbean due to world unrest. As such, demand has increased for available seats to the Caribbean.
Also, while weather is better after November, and you may be able to find cheaper airfares, the significant increase in room rates from November onward will more than cancel out any air savings.

As the above poster said, the end of November marks the start of high season in SXM. Car rentals and hotels increase significantly during the winter months.
Traveling to SXM during hurricane season (which is officially half the year anyhow) will not necessarily mean you'll be seeing a storm. The only time that I would stear clear of this area is the first two weeks of September (although a hurricane can hit at any time, that's the most common). BTW - The last major hurricane we had here was near the end of November, so you really just never know.
Good luck with your plans.
