Stayed at the Melia Habana in Miramar. It seems that all the beachfront is rocky, instead of sandy. Mind you, that didn't stop some die-hards from finding a spot and sunbathing. I wouldn't, but I'm not a die-hard beachlover/suntanner either.

Unfortunately, it's one of the dichotomies of Havana. You have the best of culture, nightlife, dining and atmosphere, but lack nice sandy beaches to swim on.
The true Cuban sandy beaches only start east of Havana in the Playa del Este (east beaches) areas. The Miramar area on the western side of Havana is a rocky coastline. However all hotels have nice swimming pools. The Copacabana Hotel has a regular pool plus a unique "ocean pool". It is an area of the shoreline that has had a concrete wall set around it (with openings) forming a sheltered ocean area to swim in. However it is about 15 feet deep and you basically just dive in from the shore. It's great for ocean swimming, not bathing per se. Having stayed at both, while the Copa's ocean pool makes for a nice swim, the Melia Habana's overall hotel and resort are nicer.

Basically it depends on what type of vacation you are looking for. If culture, sightseeing, galleries, museums, nightlife, dining and general exploring are your priorities, then Havana is THE destination in Cuba. If strictly beaches is your prime focus, then you should look to Cayo Coco, Cayo Largo, Varadero, or Playa Guardalavaca areas.
One possible compromise is to stay at Breezes Jibacoa which is an AI beach resort about one hour east of Havana. Halfway between Havana and Varadero. Then take day trips into Havana.

Hope these thoughts help you out.
