Has anyone gotten a passport lately?

Has anyone gotten a passport lately? I kinda waited to long and am now biting my fingernails. I put the application in 5 weeks before we are to leave to Turks And Caicos.

I guess the question I have is how long has it typically been to get the passport after you turn in the paper work.

Kristen1206 Sep 26th, 2006 12:13 PM

I got mine in the spring for our trip to T&C and it came in less than 4 weeks. You should be fine.

Kristen1206 Sep 26th, 2006 12:13 PM

but even if it doesn't come in time, you can still travel with just your birth certificate through the end of the year.

yalerider Sep 26th, 2006 02:20 PM

The only issue with the birth certificate is that we had to send them in to get the passport. I will call in three weeks and maybe have to expedite if it doesn't look like it will come on time.

They tell you up to 6 weeks, but my husband and I both received ours in about a month. We had then done at separate times, also, so mine did come after his, but still before the 6 week time period they say.

Thanks! I will try not to worry too much.

We just got our girls' passports in September. We applied the third week of August and received them the second week of September. So, I guess it took about 3 weeks start to finish. Good luck!

eaf2007 Sep 26th, 2006 06:29 PM

My mother just got hers in about 4 weeks.

anonxx Sep 26th, 2006 07:20 PM

Maybe it depends on where you send it from. Earlier this year we waited five weeks and then we expedited it because they hadn't started to process it yet. (they had told us 3-4 weeks) The expediting cost us $180 for our three kids but at least we could stop worrying. I just sent mine in to get renewed and they told me six weeks. Go figure...

Also, you can go down to the court house and get another birth certificate. That way you won't have to worry either way.

At our courthouse it's only $12.00 to get a notarized copy.

Can I get another birth certificate at my local courthouse if I was born in another state?

A_Traveller Sep 27th, 2006 07:56 AM

To yalerider - No, you can only get a copy of your birth certificate from the County Clerk (or the "official" who keeps the records) of the county where you were born. The Clerk in the town where you live would not have access to your birth records if you were born in another state.

Fancy coming across this thread. When we applied for our passports several weeks ago, we weren't sure where we were traveling. Also didn't know they would keep our birth certificates. In the meantime after sending in applications, we decided on St. John for our trip, so we really didn't need them, but needed our birth certificates. We were told to allow 8 weeks, although we would probably get them sooner. Well, it was getting down to the wire and I only had last Thursday to get a new birth certificate, so I traveled 2 hours to get it, spent $20 dollars on another one, DH got his the same day in another town, and lo and behold, when we got home that night, there were our passports in the mailbox! What a day that was. BTY, it took about 41/2 weeks.

angethereader Sep 28th, 2006 05:35 AM

You need to get one from the county you were born in.
For my two oldest sons this is easy as they were born in the county we live in, for the youngest (who of course has traveled abroad quite a bit) I have to call and have them mail it to me.
I did get it in a couple of days.

Has anyone had any luck with this link when waiting for a passport? We submitted them over two weeks ago and nothing shows up yet.

Signs up in local US post offices are now advise using an expediting service (about US$60-75 per passport) if you plan to travel within 8 weeks of application.
