That was a pretty interesting webpage Larry. No way in heck I would ever go there. "Antartica is the coldest, driest, and iciest continent on Earth". Might as well go to Everest base Camp and hang out. It also said is is dark 6 months out of the year. Yuck. Give me warmth anyday!
Kelly,
You are eventually going to have to give in, suck it up, and go to Alaska. The guy has been waiting for 4 years to go! You will just have to make sure you get two Caribbean trips in next year after that to satiate your "addiction" to the Caribbean. BTW, hope thay have electric blankets on that cruise

Brenda, we are planning again for May '07 to Alaska. Yes, I will suck it up and go this time. I have one of those electric throws that I'm sure to carry with me.
Anyone know of an electric blanket that runs on batteries???

After reading all the posts, it made me realize why I am so crazy about the Caribbean.
Way, way back when we were in our early 30's, we spent 5 straight summers at Pt. Barrow, Alaska which is on the Arctic Ocean. Our girls were 12 and 13. Wore parkas all summer. Had to line the quonset hut windows with foil to try and have some dark for sleeping. My husband was (and still is) totally involved with research involving grasses and carbon. It was very interesting because we were able to go to the whaling celebrations, and become friends with some of the village children, etc. We were out on the tundra at a Naval Research Lab which invloved scientist from all over the world.
I am sure glad we did it when we were young because I wouldn't want to spend my summers like that again We had not yet discovered the Caribbean nor would we have had the money to go.
We made our way to Alaska twice on the inside passage and once drove to Fairbanks. It is a beautiful state, but give me the caribbean anyday. Must be my old age. Owa

Well, I think a trip to Antarctica would be fantastic, especially if combined with a stopover in Chile or Argentina. I'm not sure that I would want to give up the Caribbean in order to do it, however. Any way that you could do both, Kristen?

I'm a caribbean junkie too but Alaska is INCREDIBLE, it's near impossible to see so much land in such a pristine and wild state, and since i doubt that will last forever, I felt the need to see it before it went away.
My dad lived in Juneau so we visited him, home based there, but took the ferry up the inside passage overnight, did a lot of traveling around, saw bears, went out on a friend's boat twice and saw otters, orcas, whales, caught halibut and salmon....bald eagles are like pigeons there, simply everywhere.
I would like to go back and check out Denali. I have a friend working there this summer and the photos she's sending me are making me want to get back soon.

I didn't even know that you could actually vacation in the antarctic? That would be on the bottom of my list of places to go. I agree with you Kristen...too many nicer places to go.
We do ski and we actually just bought a small place in the mountains. When the wind howls, it is too cold for me. But it doesn't get the best tv reception and the cell phones don't work all that great and we have girls turning teens. So, this is our family togetherness time.
We all love the warm beachy places to relax and snorkel. Can't afford an island or beach place...yet....

Kristen, great subject line tease
I agree--an Alaska cruise is on a future trip list... but Antarctica!? Friends returned, bubbling with enthusiasm for their trip to Antarctica. They've traveled the world and it was the first time I didn't feel envious.
Maybe you can appeal to your husband based on $$ saved by not going. Isn't getting there pretty expensive?
(Faithie--glad to see your name, chere gentille Canuck!)

Kristin,
I suggested a trip to Greenland in JANUARY to my husband and he said "great". He gets cold easily, but decided to brave the elements. We had a wonderful trip.
Recently he got the opportunitiy to go on a trip to Montserrat (part of a research team investigating volcano effects) and invited me along. I've never been to the Caribbean and since I'm a cold weather person, I'm not sure how much I'll like the heat, beach (not to mention the volcanic ash).
I figure a vacation is an adventure, there's so much to see, and then you get home and are (hopefully) glad to live where you live for most of the year.

Since you have to cruise to get to Antarctica, it is usually discussed on the cruise board.
We've been there, and it is truly amazing. Of course, you have to love ice, rarely seen birds, whales, penguins, seals, history, geology, the majesty of nature, etc.
It is not a vacation. It is an adventure.
