gros inlet jump up
what is the scoop with the "jump up " in gros inlet..is it fun???is it safe for tourist????...i have 13 year old is it ok for him?????

Mike-
My wife and I participated in the "jump up" several years ago. We had a local as a guide, but there were many tourists there. It is held in the streets and everyone just mills around and dances to the tunes. It was fun and something that should not be missed. You don't say where you are staying, but it may be possible to hire a taxi driver to take you there and be your guide. I didn't see many teenagers there, but I guess it could be because St. Lucia has many couples resorts.
I hope this info has helped. E-mail if you have any more questions.

Hi Mike,

I agree totally with Larry. The Friday night street party is a great time....we drove ourselves and with all the other tourists and police around, never felt there was any problem. Just stick with the crowds and you'll have a great time....loud music, great food and cold beer.

Schultz

Mike: I had been really looking forward to going to the Gros ISLET jump up when we went a couple of years ago. I actually felt a little intimidated (no presence of law enforcement and very few tourists); and we got swindled by two locals - a long story but no big deal.

I just expected it to be better than what it was. I suppose if you go in not expecting much you could have a great time. I'm not sure about the 13 year old. I only noticed a lot of drinking, loud music, and locals selling beer and BBQ, but I could be wrong.

Granted,

We haven't been to St Lucia, since '97, we attended the "Jump Up" and were not impressed, and even a bit nervous at times. We too went with some locals from our resort, who had to fend off several aggressive young men, and also a couple of pushy drug dealers. We couldn't walk 5 feet, without being offered some sort of drug mostly ganja or coke. Never saw a cop the whole time we were there. We were grateful to have some locals from our resort there to look out for us. The whole celebration seemed as if it would be very enjoyable, if it weren't for the very pushy street vendors, and drug dealers, not to mention the young men blatently hitting on our wives right in front of you.
I really hope this has changed since we went, as we usually enjoy this type of activity. No we are not afraid of the local folk, but this was an exception, and they were more aggressive than we had experienced elsewhere on the island. If there are now a lot of police, and such, it is probably much better than what we experienced

Tim: Things haven't changed, at least not in 2000. I forgot to mention as you did the extremely pushy vendors and aggressive men. They'll make you something out of straw or whatever without even asking if you would want it and then expect you to take it AND pay for it. No thanks.

DO NOT walk from the north end of the island through Rodney Bay... it is NOT safe!
