Grenada/Carriacou
 

Hi! I am going to Laluna (near Grand Anse) in Grenada for 5 days in April... I have heard that Carriacou is a must for at least a day trip. Has anyone been, and if so, would you please share with me what the trip entails? I know Grenada is a small island but is the trip to wherever the boat to Carriacou leaves from very far/hard to get from Laluna? Thank you!

I stayed at Tank's Paradise Inn on deserted Paradise Beach. Might be a bit rustic for you, though, if Laluna is what you like. I don't recommend staying in Hillsborough or the Silver Beach Hotel.<BR><BR>A taxi ride around Carriacou makes for a good day trip. The north end has spectacular scenery. Hi there!<BR><BR>I was in Grenada about month ago- definitely go to Carriacou! But try to spend more than just a day there. Didn't see much of Carriacou due to the lack of time. The minute we got there, we went straight to Sandy Island and felt like we were literally stranded! There is a family that owns a restaurant right off the beach that can take you to Sandy Island for about 20 EC. They make great roti's too. Make sure you bring a small cooler for drinks and snacks!<BR><BR>The Osprey (docked at the Carenage which isn't far from Grand Anse) will take you to Carriacou. Some ideas: a guided trip around the island to see the nutmeg processing center, the rainforest, a rum distillery (River Antoine is very old and interesting as is Clark's Court)-- your hotel can set you up with a guide. A guided hike to a waterfall for a swim. A visit to the open air market. A day trip to LaSagesse for a nature center tour and time on a totally deserted beach. Be sure to pick up a copy of the Greetings magazine for lots of helpful info and ideas.

We have done the day trip by air - more expensive but avoids the rough sea and may give you a bit more time on the island. We also rented a jeep to explore the island, but you have to be prepared for the roads.

Fortunately Grenada has taken steps to protect the environment which is one of its strong points. They turned Grand Etang Lake into a forest reserve which is an exceptional rainforest experience. There are other eco locations shown at www.grenada.org/gdeco01.htm <BR>Food is another strong point with an amazing array of fresh produce and fish.. almost nothing is imported like so many other islands do these days.

Definately go to dinner at the Italian restaurant on the other side of the road from the Flamboyant Hotel (can't remember the name). The setting is beautiful, overlooking the town and grand anse beach and the food is wonderful.

Jane34, a restaurant across the road from the Flamboyant that I remember well was called Tabanca...an island word for something like sadness and disappointment in love, according to the owner. Could that be the one you are referring to ? The food was brilliant but only when the owner was on the premises !

I just remembered the name of the Italian restaurant, La Dolce Vita, it was wonderful. <BR>
