Great Bay, St. Maarten. Is it great?

I have never stayed at the Great Bay Hotel, but have read a LOT of negative things about it. Also, St. Martin has some of the best restaurants in the Caribbean -- are you sure you want to go the all-inclusive route? It's also a safe (use your common sense) & fun island to explore. You should rent a jeep & get away from the resort.

I have stayed at Great Bay but didn't take the all-inclusive package. The hotel is okay. The people who took the all-inclusive package seemed to think it was a good deal. We didn't eat at the hotel at all. St. Martin has some wonderful restaurants. We rented a car and explored the island on our own. No problems.

My boyfriend and I stayed at Great Bay in Feb. '99. We both became violently ill from both ends (if you know what I mean!!) We were pestered daily by timeshare offers. The service was not terrible but I have had better at a 2* in Cuba. However, we both liked St. Martin very much. The island is beautiful and the jewellery shopping is excellent. We would go back in the future but would stay somewhere else and we would not go with Air Transat. If you want more info, send me an e-mail.

We've visited the resort, but haven't stayed there. It is one of the older resorts on the island, and as mentioned, the beach is not all that nice. It is, however, withing walking distance of downtown and great shopping.
St. Maarten is not an island where you want to do an all-inclusive. There are over 300 restaurants on the island, with prices from quite inexpensive to places where you might have to second-mortgage the house for a meal.
We think that you could do better.

We stayed at Great Bay in October 99.
We had a very good experience the room
was very large and clean. We went all-
inclusive and found the food to be good
and lots of it. Our only problem was
we were hit with hurrican hose which of
course did'nt make for a great trip. However Great Bay did an outstanding job
considering they had about 600 guests
stranded in the hotel. The food by the
Wednesday was all buffet style but that
could not be helped they only had so
many staff staying at the hotel to look
after all the guests. Even during the
hurricane the maids were still going
room to room to do the daily cleaning
and bed changing. I would go back to
Great Bay! We only got 3 out of our 7
day vacation due to the hurrican so we
did'nt get to see too much. It's true
the beach at Great Bay is not the greatest but it is certainly useable it's just not that big. I am more of
pool person I like to look at the beach
and walk along the water. It is a quick
walk into town for shopping. The time
share people do bother you however I
found it worse in Aruba for that. As long as you say thanks but were not
interested and go along your mary way
you need not worry. If you are not
interested in a time share tell them
so as soon as they approach you. We
learned that in Aruba.
I think you will find if you go it's
a good value for your dollar. We also
went with Air Transat and did not
have any complaints. The best thing
I find about the all inclusive is you
never need to walk with money. You
want a drink you just walk to the bar
and ask for it. You don't feel like your hand is in your pocket all the time. If you do go Enjoy!
