Grand Cayman Trip Report, 4/19-24
Just back last night from GC--thanks to everyone on this forum who helped out with suggestions and advice! We had a fabulous time.
Here are my thoughts on our trip:
GETTING THERE:
Travelling to GC from Boston was fairly smooth. The only hang-up was a delay getting into our gate in Miami--we had to wait about 1/2 an hour for a plane to move so we could get in. I wouldn't mention this, except that we had the same problem on the way back, so maybe this is a chronic problem with Miami? If you have a tight connection, this could be an issue--we nearly missed our flight coming home due to similar delays getting into the gate and a long delay getting our bags to go through customs. Plus we had to walk for what seemed like miles between gates (carrying a tired 3-year-old). If the flight hadn't been delayed due to weather in Boston, we'd have missed it. We may have to find another way to the Caribbean in future--my husband swears he never wants to see that airport again!
Other than that, getting into GC was fine. The airport is so nice and small, and everyone was friendly and helpful. We missed picking up one carseat in the customs area (that's what getting up at 4:30 am will do to you
and didn't realize it until we got to the rental car place, but everyone was very helpful about going back through customs to get it.
GETTING AROUND:
One of the highlights of our trip, at least in terms of family memories, was that rental car--a tiny Daihatsu with an itty bitty trunk that we somehow managed to squeeze our bags into. My husband did a great job adjusting to driving on the left--except that he kept hitting the wipers instead of the turn indicator, which made us laugh every time.
As navigator and co-pilot, I kept up the reminders to "stay left" at intersections and parking lots, and we managed just fine. That was the one photo my husband insisted on before we left--he just had to have a pic with that little car!
WHERE WE STAYED:
We stayed at the Turtle Nest Inn, which is a bit off the beaten track in Bodden Town. We loved being out of the way of the 7 Mile Beach crowds and traffic. The inn was lovely and very peaceful. All 8 rooms are similar--all are 1-bedroom apartments with full kitchens. Ours was one of the smaller units, on the first floor, but was still plenty big. We did not have an ocean-front room initially (more on that later), but we had a large patio with sliders off both the bedroom and living room that had a view of the water. We ate dinner on the patio, which was great. On our last night we were supposed to be moved to a different room (an even smaller one, we had been told on booking), but the owners ended up giving us an ocean-front room at no extra charge. That room was a bit larger and had a patio facing the sea and the pool. We really enjoyed that for our last night!
The TNI isn't fancy, so it may not be for everyone, but it really worked for us. We were able to cook our own meals (which helped cut costs and was easier with my son's food allergies), and it was so relaxed. There were never many people by the pool and sometimes no one but us. The beach, as reported by others on this forum, is rocky and has lots of grass in the water, but my kids enjoyed the upper sandy part for digging, and it was great for my son, who loves collecting miscellaneous flotsam and jetsam. Among his finds were a small coconut, pieces of worn pottery, interesting coral bits, and lots of small shells and pieces of shells. Unlike 7MB, however, the beach is not "cleaned up"--we also found glass, shoes, and other debris, some of which was probably washed up after Ivan.
We did not, alas, snorkel out to the reef at TNI, but others told us they did see a lot of fish there. My kids LOVED the pool, which is simple and fairly small but had plenty of toys and floats to play with, and I loved sitting by the pool and watching the frigate birds soar overhead in the late afternoons. We also enjoyed sitting outside at night listening to the waves and looking at the constellations with our kids--I'm not sure it would have been dark enough to do that at 7MB with all the development there.
Our only regret is that the inn's weekly "terrace dinner" was cancelled when we were there, due to too few guests signing up. I was really looking forward to that!
It's also good to note that there is still lots of damage from Ivan visible around Bodden Town, which to us made our stay more interesting, but it's not "tidied up" like most of the 7MB area.
ACTIVITIES:
We did travel away from the TNI most days for activities around the island. Our first full day on GC we spent at SMITH COVE, which was really lovely and one of our favorite places overall. It's small, and there were quite a few people there, but it wasn't crowded. It definitely had a lot of "local color." We enjoyed watching kids jumping off the rocks into the water and checking out the variety of fish some men had caught and had laid out on the rocks for cleaning. We saw lots of little fish around the rocks without even having to swim out very far, which was great for my son, and my younger daughter loved playing in the sheltered cove.
Day 2 was our GEORGE TOWN day. We walked around a bit, though we didn't find much of interest in terms of shopping. But maybe if my husband had let me actually go INTO some shops, I would have found more to like!!
We then split up for our adventures on the ATLANTIS SUB and SEAWORLD EXPLORER. My husband took my 8-year-old son on the sub, and I took my daughter on the SE, as she was under age 4, and I wasn't sure she would like being stuck underwater for the length of the sub trip. Turned out to be a good decision, as she barely lasted through the SE trip, which was shorter and less complicated. I can't comment on the sub ride except to say that my son LOVED it, and my husband was annoyed by the "canned" patter of the guides. I expected to be disappointed by the Seaworld Explorer but ended up having a fabulous time. We really lucked out, though--my daughter and I were the only ones on board, so we had a crew of 3 for just the 2 of us!! I have to say that the crew was marvelous, and I was SO impressed that they didn't cancel our trip and make us take a later one. As we had our own personal guide, I peppered him with questions about all the fish we saw, and he was very patient.
The Seaworld Explorer is a bit like being in an aquarium, except that you're on the inside and the fish are on the outside. When one of the crew dived down to feed some fish and bring them up close, it was absolutely amazing--since no one else was on the boat, he just brought them all up right in front of us and blew bubbles at my daughter. That was great!
We also visted the TURTLE FARM that second day, which was fun but a bit of a letdown. Both my husband and I were surprised that there were no information signs or information pamphlets about the turtles, and no staff to answer questions--or help us at the touch tank. If it hadn't been for an independent guide who was with a tour group, we wouldn't have known that we could pick up the smaller turtles or known HOW to pick them up. Fortunately, he showed us, and my son was able to pick one up. But we expected a bit more. My kids liked it, but it wasn't a highlight for them.
The third day we had a nice picnic lunch and played at what we think was GOVERNOR'S BEACH on the north end of 7MB. That was very nice, and we enjoyed the views down the beach and the blue water. My daughter liked the playground, though it was a bit hot there.
In the afternoon, my son and I went to STINGRAY CITY with Capt. Dexter. We enjoyed the trimaran ride out, which was pretty dramatic, as it was windy and a bit choppy. I was surprised that the Capt. did not give out life jackets, particularly for my son. We stopped first at the sandbar, which was busy, with 4 or 5 boats already there. We had a bit of trouble finding a spot, so we had to swim a bit to reach the sandbar, which was a little tricky with my son. We both wore life jackets in the water, so that made it somewhat easier. Both of us enjoyed the stingrays, though they were a little intimidating for my son. Then we went to a snorkel site a short distance away. That was great, though again a bit choppy. We sailed back in, which was really pleasant and relaxing. But it's a long trip--in total, we were gone 4 hours, which was a bit tough on my husband and daughter, who didn't come with us (they went back to the inn to swim in the pool).
On our last day, we went to RUM POINT. From things I'd read here, I wasn't sure what I'd think of Rum Point, but despite being rather crowded, we really enjoyed ourselves. I thought the beach would be bigger, though. But my son liked snorkelling around the dock (though we didn't see many fish compared to other places), and it was an easy place for my daughter to play in the shallow water. And I finally got to eat some conch (fritters)!
We drove the shorter route going there and took the longer route home, around the East End. We really enjoyed the dramatic coastline on this end of the island, especially around the blowholes.
FOOD:
We did not, alas, eat out much, except for the Wreck Bar at Rum Point, so I can't comment on restaurants. We bought groceries and cooked in most of the time, which sounds unadventurous, but because of my son's allergies is just easier and more relaxing (not to mention cheaper!). We did find most of the brands we're used to in the stores, and though things were a bit expensive, they weren't that much more than stores around Boston. Fish for the mostpart was cheaper.
OVERALL:
We had a wonderful relaxing time on GC, and we'd certainly go back. But we kept wondering what the island looked like before Ivan. Somewhere I'd read before we left that if you hadn't been to GC before Ivan, you wouldn't notice the difference. Maybe it's because we didn't stay on 7MB, where things have been really fixed up, but we felt that you could see the effects everywhere. We didn't mind that most of the time, and in fact found it interesting, but we missed having more lush vegetation.
We also noticed that the entire island seems to be for sale--there were so many "for sale" signs that we joked that they should be the national symbol. I particularly loved one sign I saw outside a house along the road from Rum Point to the East End--it was a carved and painted wooden sign that said "Not for Sale"!
We also decided that the national bird should be the chicken, because we saw more of them than anything else. (Not to mention the rooster we could hear every morning from our inn!) I wondered how much the wildlife was affected by Ivan as well.
We are not big on big resorts and big development, so although we enjoyed seeing 7MB, we wouldn't want to stay there. But because of all that development, there and elsewhere on the island, we found it hard to see the shoreline--unlike Calif., where I grew up, you can't really drive along the coast and look at the views, except in the East End. To see the water, you really have to park and walk to a beach in most places.
I hope some of these last comments don't sound too negative--we did have a wonderful time and really enjoyed the people of the island and the beautiful beaches and water. This was our first venture to the Caribbean, and with young kids was just the right kind of place--very safe and clean, with plenty for families to do. We'll definitely go back!

Hey man, you never came to see me... sniff
Glad you had a good trip though !
Re for sale signs, that is often commented on... but it has always been the way. Property values in Cayman keep rising, so a lot of people allow realtors to list their property (and so put out a (Century 21 / ReMax / Coldwell Banker / Sothebys etc) sign, in the hope that someone makes them an offer they can't refuse.
I'm in the market for affordable beachfront land to build another resort, but trust me, there are no fire sales

Welcome back! Glad you had a good time.
We've gone through Miami Airport on several occasion and yes it sucked each time. My husband and I swear we'll never go through that airport ever again, but unfortunately it's a major hub to the Caribbean.
I'm the driver on trips and I, like your husband, had the turn signal/windshield wiper issue too which entertained my husband quite a bit.
I believe that the beach you were at was not Governor's Beach but the Public Beach and it is called just that. We stopped by it, originally thinking it was Governor's Beach, and my son used the swings for a bit. Governor's beach is not too far from it though.
I'm surprised the Turtle Farm doesn't always have someone by the small tank. I guess we lucked out.
We also saw that not for sale sign. That was funny.
Anyway, welcome back and thanks for letting us know how your trip went.

One more note on my trip report... I will try eventually to post photos, but technology is not my strong suit!
caribtraveler: Thanks for your comments. We weren't positive that we were at Governor's Beach, but we saw a sign across the road for Governor's _____ (something) and knew we were in the general area. Oh well! It was still nice, though, and my kids enjoyed it.
TomCayman: Yes, sorry we did not stop in to see you! We had two sleepy kids in the back seat and thought it was best just to keep on driving--maybe next time! Thanks, too, for letting us know about the 4-sale signs--we wondered if it had anything to do with Ivan.
christiegr: I'm jealous that you'll be leaving soon for GC! I miss it already... If you have any other questions, let me know. I'm happy to be of help. Have a great trip!

christiegr, have a wonderful vacation in Grand Cayman. We just got back from a vacation in Varadero, Cuba. It is a wonderful island and the beaches are beautiful, white and long and the water clear and turquoise. I loved our day trip to Havana. Enjoyed seeing old Havana. It is a very beautiful city with beautiful architecture. It was like going back in time. No fast food restaurants in Cuba.
Fabulous vacation.8-)
Hope your vacation is as good as our vacation. Have a great time.

We did drink the local beer from Stingray Brewing Co., which was decent. I had wanted to visit the brewery, which we passed on our way from the airport to our inn in Boddentown, but never got there. They do have tours, though, if you're interested.
We shopped for food at both Hurley's and Foster's. We liked Hurley's location, which was right on the way to our inn and had most of what we needed, but we did make one trip to Foster's for a couple of items we didn't see at Foster's. Prices seemed comparable to me.
Any other questions, feel free to ask! We've been back for about 3 weeks, and I'm still thinking about GC!

JS...
I'm so glad your trip turned out well. I am also glad you liked Dexter and sorry the seas were choppy.
I wish you had gotten out to Ivory Kai for the kids. All children love the starfish, and these are there where they can touch them and learn about them.
Maybe next trip
You say you find 7MB to be too congested for your tastes. I'd like to suggest, for your next trip, renting a condo from someone on the Northside. We stay at Harv's Kai and love it. You can snorkel the shallows right behind the condo and the pool is wonderful.
Its quieter on that side, and you really get a different feel.
Again, welcome home, and I am glad you had such a good trip!

Karen-
Thanks so much. Wish we'd had time for Ivory Kai--I thought 5 days would be plenty, but I could easily have stayed 5 more! We really enjoyed Rum Pt. and the north side, so that's a great suggestion for another trip--though we were also very happy with the Turtle Nest Inn.
The trip with Capt. Dexter really was great, despite the choppy water. It was only an issue because my son is so small--when we were on the sandbar, the waves were practically knocking him over! He loved it, though, and we'd definitely go back.
Thanks for all your suggestions!
