Grand Cayman snorkling
 

Hi Fodor friends,
Heading to Grand Cayman and need some recommended snorkling spots. We enjoy driving around exploring the island, parking, hitting the beach and snorkling from the beach.
Helpful if you mention public restrooms or lunch spots nearby and any special weather conditions.
Has all the good snorkling spots recovered from the hurricanes?

Haven't been to Cayman in abt 5 years-- but back when we were there (a couple of times), "The Cemetery" was one of the better places. Up at the top end of 7 mile beach (away from Georgetown). Not difficult to park, anyone can tell you exactly where it is. Don't remember any public bathrooms there, but several restaurants not far away. Eden Rocks was our other favorite snorekling. (In both places, be sure to explore a very wide path, not just directly "out front."

Where is Eden's Rock from the top of 7 mile beach? What made it special for you?

Eden Rocks is at the opposite part of 7-mile beach than where the cemetery is. ER is in town. The groovy thing is that instead of swimming over very shallow water, as at the cemetery, the coral comes up from very deep water-- and there's an enormous amount of terrfic coral. Many people dive among the boulders and coral at ER rocks also (as they do not at Cemetery). It's fun, for instance, to lie there, floating on top with your snorkel stuff, look down and see not only zillions of fish and terrific coral, but then notice waaaay down the scuba people too!

Edens Rock is also very popular with the cruise crowd as it is right near the tender area, so you might want to check the port schedule to see how many ships are in town the day you want to snorkel. http://www.caymanport.com/schedule.htm

There's a little lesser known area is on 7MB. If you go to what is known as the GOVERNOR'S HOUSE, there's a great snorkel area, if you swim out about 75 to 100 yards. From that spot on the beach, you can walk in either direction to: Westin or Holiday Inn.(food and drinks) Have a good time!!

EJC knows they are talking about. The Gov's house is good. Take a noodle with u and u can stay out there all day. Take bread with u early in the morning and the fish will follow u until u out. All sizes of fish too. In front of Coral Gardens always 2 crowded with people from Beaches. And best of all no charge.

Are you thinking about T&C in reference to Coral Gardens? They're asking about snorkeling on GC. They don't have a Beaches resort on GC.

Is Governor's House top of 7MB/West Bay area?
conch...did you mean Coral Gables? Or Coral Gardens in T&C, which we enjoyed, when the 'Beaches' crowd came, picked up, went for a walk or sat on our balcony. We didn't find them to be too much of a deterrent for staying again at CG.
