Grand Cayman

I have never been to Cayman Islands so I am not sure what part of the island to stay on. We are looking at a private condo on Cayman Kai. Does anyone know if this is a good part of the island to snorkel with nice sandy beaches? Looking for nice calm waters.

Hi..Cayman Kai is a great choice. There is a reef about 50 yrds offshore and calm waters are easily found inside or outside the reef. There are a number of bars/restuarants and small stores there on the Northside. I usually fly in,rent a jeep, do some shopping for food, wine and head out Cayman Kai..rarely venturing back to town. Have a great time..

I usually recommend that a person visiting Grand Cayman for the first time stay in the Seven Mile Beach area. There are many restaurants and supermarkets nearby and you will be a 10 minute drive from the airport. There is snorkeling off the beach especially in the northern part of Seven Mile beach. The beaches are sandy. The beaches in front of the condos are uncrowded and the only areas that are crowded are the few areas where cruise ship passengers congregate and in front of the hotels.

Many people love the snorkeling on the Northside, where Cayman Kai is or the East End. The area is less built up than Seven Mile Beach. However, the beaches for the most part are not sandy. During the winter months the East End can be windy which may effect the water.

As I remember there is an abundance of turtle grass in the water at C.K. don't like the feel. I prefer the clean sand of 7 Mile. That said C.K. is quieter, and less touristy. Whatever you choose you will enjoy Cayman. If you are looking for a condo there are also lots on 7 Mile. Personal preference is Villas of the Galleon.

If you truly want the best beach on Grand Cayman, you need to stay on 7MB, which is actually 5.5 miles long, but it's by far the best stretct of beach onthe island. Plenty of great snorkeling to be had along 7MB from the south end to the north end.
