GPS in Aruba
Can I use my personal GPS in Aruba? Will it work with the electric system in a rental car? Please advise.
|
Without knowing what electrical system your gps uses it is impossible to say if it will work in a rental car.
if you are talking about google maps on your phone, yes, gps satellites are visible in Aruba and google maps works well |
I'm from the U.S.A. and my GPS would work using the cigarette lighter opening.

The car I rented last year in Aruba did not have a cigarette lighter opening, only a USB port. Any reason you don't use a maps app on your phone? If you don't have a smart phone, then that's ok.

Cars in Aruba (and just about everywhere else around the world) have the same 12V electrical systems as cars found in the US. If your Aruba rental car has a built-in cigarette lighter you can use it to charge your GPS. Some cars don't have the actual lighter but do have the "cigarette socket" where you can charge your GPS.
Note: Many late model cars no longer have cigarette lighters and offer only USB ports . Most older cars with USB ports have USB-A ports only, while many late model cars have both USB-A and USB-C ports. |
Haven’t been to Aruba, but have to St. John, St. Croix, Grand Cayman, and Bonaire. We travelling out of the US we always download an offline map to our phone so we can use the phone GPS without using data. Last two cars we rented had Android auto so made navigating even easier. As noted above the last car we got had no lighter plug, only USB.
